how can you tell if a dog is pregnant?

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

how can you tell if a dog is pregnant? because coco, ginger's mom, might be pregnant again...she was supposed to be in heat in december or january...and she had been losing wait after her last pregnancy, but now she's kind of fat again...and she's been very sleepy lately, just lying on the couch all day. my friend stacey, coco's owner, said that that was how she acted during her last pregnancy...so do you people (or dogs?) think she is pregnant? i hope she is...because that would mean that ginger would have a new friend!

Well you won't like my response or anyone else's, but encouraging mixed breed dogs is irresponsible, even if they are cute and will get homes, not to mention the poor mama is the smaller of the two and could require a c-section or even die giving birth. The motto on these forums is SPAY AND NEUTER. Unless you are a certified breeder who is educated in the proper breeding techniques and are only breeding to further the better health and conformity of the breed DON'T. That doesn't answer your original question. I feel sorry for the mama dog. Your dog's parents need to be spayed and neutered, and so does she when she is old enough. Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear.

The vet can do an ultrasound or xray and let you know. Just so that you know, you can spay a pregnant dog to terminate the pregnancy.

At first only an x-ray or ultrasound can reveal if she is pregnant. This sounds like an unplanned litter, so your friend can perform a spay that would terminate the pregnancy.

also, your page says ginger is only 6 months, that is much too soon to allow the mother to get pregnant again. VERY unhealthy and unfair for poor coco. think of the strain that puts on her body,it'll put her in an early grave. sorry to be so harsh, but facts is facts.
