Hi Everyone,

New Years Eve night our Boomer went paralyzed. He had surgery and had sever spinal damage =(. It is day three after surgery and he does not have motor movements het but we are hopeful. This is our first night home with him.

We love him so much. How long did it take your dogs to walk or stumble around after surger?

Thanks for sharing all of your stories, they are really inspirational.

My Mommy says:

"My Pepper had emergency back surgery 5 weeks ago today. He jumped off the couch and ruptured a disk. After it occurred, he was dragging one leg behind him and by the next day, the other back leg as well. It was a swift, but still difficult decision. He was kept in the hospital so the Neurosurgeons could monitor him for a few days. Once he had the sensation to go potty on his own, they released him. He was ordered antibiotics, pain killers, and steriod pills for about 10 days and complete CRATE rest for 6-8 weeks! Since Pepper has always had free reign of the house, and has not been crated since he was a little pup and he's now almost 10 yr old, it was sad to have to confine him like this. He seems to have adjusted though, even 5 weeks into this recovery period. We take him out of the crate about 5 times a day. Carry him to the yard and let him walk around to do his business, then right back in he goes! We had to use a sling to lift his back end a bit when he first had the surgery, but within a few days, he was holding his own weight and walking. He was wobbly at first, but now walks well. He only seems to sweep one foot under him a little bit, but nothing to noticeable. He is eating and acting like his old self again. Next week, at his 6 week ck up, they'll let us know if he should be crated another 2 weeks or not. I feel he is safer in there for now as I can just imagine the doorbell ringing and him running to it and reinjuring himself. They said since I did the surgery so quickly after the injury occured, he has a 85-90% chance of full recovery, and had a waited a few months and then did the surgery, it only has a 40-50% success rate. We feel we made the right decision. His scar is healing nicely, stitches are out and hair is growing back well. It's a personal decision, but for us, we know this was the best for Pepper and our family. As a Weiner Dog, they said this is extremely common and he must NEVER be allowed again to jump off of anything or ANY height. So, we will have to confine him to certain areas of the home when we are out where he cannot jump onto any furniture. There are adjustments to be made, but we can all get used to it. Good luck to anyone who has this life-changing event occur in their family. God Bless.."

I'm so blessed to have a family that loves me so much! I'm feeling stronger each day and plan to keep them happy for a looooooonnnngggg time! smile

HI! I am glad to have discovered this site. Its helpful and comforting to see that others are going through the same thing. MY Daschund Ginger woke up Sundat morning and quickly lost the use of her back legs (but aparantly still havd some sensation) and had emergency surgery to remove two ruptured discs that night. What is killing me the most id that I was only able to visit with her last night-24 hours AFTER her surgery - and cant go today-(the hospital is 2 1/2 hours away and it is raining and windy). SHe was soo excited and happy to see us that she gulped down a can of food! Now IM told she hasnt eaten since.
WE are going to pick her up tomorrow but I am afraid that she doesnt understand how much I want to see her but cannot . I feel she would eat if I were to bring her home . It hurts soomuch to not be able to let her know how much I want to be with her and am counting down the hours til shes back

Hey everyone, i just found this site while looking for opinions and others to talk to about my little man having surgery on a ruptured disc. It is located toward the center of his back right where the rib cage ends. Jimmy is a 4 year old "tweenie." He was showing signs of pain to my BF while I was at work on Thursday night. My BF took him to the vet and he was sent home with some aspirin and muscle relaxers. We finally went to bed (no one slept well that night!) and when we woke up in the morning Jimmy had a hard time walking, his back end looked like it was drunk. We called the vet, they said its neurological and to take him to Tufts right away. My friend is a vet tech so she came with me. We dropped him off Friday around 2pm. We didn't get the first call til 10pm saying that his surgery was pushed back. We get another call around 3am Saturday that he was out of surgery. They finally did the surgery because he lost function in his back end. The surgeon said that when she started working on him he was already under and didn't know if he lost his pain sensation. Today (Thursday) his personality has returned but his ability to walk and urinate on his own has not. We were told that he should still regain his ability to walk but were worried that they waited too long to do the surgery and he won't walk again. Has anyone else had a dog that took longer to start walking? Also when we do bring him home im worried about Jimmy being too stressed out being stuck in his crate, he is not a fan of it, especially if someone is home. Any other tips or anything will be greatly appreciated!! Ill update with pics and such when Jimmy comes home!!!
