Hello everyone, as you know, the breed-specific legislation affects/effects (sorry frown ) us Chows too. My friend Zelda's momma wrote this and wanted me to share, so, here goes:

Date: Apr 17, 2007 10:31 AM
Subject breed specific legislation
Body:
First they came for the “bad” dogs
and I did not speak out
because I was not a “bad” dog.
Then they came for the pit bulls
and I did not speak out
because I was not a pit bull.
Then they came for the “guardian” breeds
and I did not speak out
because I was not a “guardian” breed.
And then they came for me.

It is not a secret that PETA wants to abolish ALL pet ownership.
It’s also not a secret that people are ignorant.
It’s also not a secret that people listen to the media, and the media is not very nice to us.
It’s also not a secret that the general consensus is that you have to be the popular opinion of cute to be loved (no matter what species you are).
And it’s also not a secret that people will classify any general group based upon their very specific dealings with limited specimens of that group.
Think of people… here. Race wars, segregation, hatred, terrorists… the list goes on and on and it would be easier to name off the derogatory terms we call other people to truly understand the extent of the humans' desire to squash everything that is considered a threat to them.

One person, one dog, one deed DOES NOT portray the mentality of the entire population.

Pass this along if you feel the same way.

Mom & dad make no secret that they were a little 'reserved' about 'my breed' mix, butt they were won over by my 'winning personality' (dad's words).
More & more i think they believe that it 'ain't the breed--it's the people'--the breeders that ought not be breeding (puppy mills) & the owners that ought not be owning (like Abby's & my last owners)
Dad has written & will gladly write again to our elected officials (local & state) concerning breed-spicific legislation.

Ditto. It is NOT the breed, it is the owners that cause their specific dogs to do bad things or allow them to do bad things.

Sadly, when we adopted Justy, we insisted she be listed by our vet as a Lab mix on her licensing papers instead of Lab/Chow mix because many homeowners insurance companies are refusing to cover if you have a dog from the "Bad List" not to mention the other bans in communities around the country.

On the upside, I guess we're lucky that she is obviously 1/2 Lab.

What a sad state of affairs when the very little "cute" dog next door can nip every child walking to the bus stop without suffering legal battles or insurance issues, but dogs that have never done anything wrong is denied insurance or entry into some neighborhoods. Why don't my neighbor's have to pay fines or fence their dog? Heck, she's the reason I put a 6 foot fence between my dogs & their yard!

Well, they just passed AB 1634 here in sunny CA. frown I will never understand how a handful of people can determine the fate for the largest state in the US. (I think it is anyway, I don't remember)..
What's next? Population control? YA, I think THAT would fix the problem! Hey, let us GOOD Chows rally together and demand that humans be bred to be more loving and tolerant of the pets they get THEN maybe it would be a better place for us Furkids!!

Today I just read where a chow attacked and killed his owner.
Although I feel so bad for the woman, again it all comes from the way the dogs are raised. Poodles go crazy too but you never hear about them because they don't cause that much damage.
The owners daughter said it was an aggressive dog and the owner was scared of him. Well, steps should have been taken long before she feared him. Now, it's just one more reason for people to fear chows.
