|How did you discover "the breed"?
I started a thread on Dogster saying what I wanted in a dog and German Shepherds, among others, were suggested I wanted a dog that would be good off lead, biddable and willing to please, and aloof with strangers. Not super specific but when people suggested GSDs and I started looking into them, I remembered the police dog demonstration I'd seen in my Animal Behavior class in high school and become intrigued by protection/protection sports. After doing more research on the breed/lines, I decided they sounded like a good match.
What makes you love this breed so much in comparison to all the choices out there?
So far Onyx has been absolutely fantastic; he's everything I wanted in a dog and more. I love how he keeps me in his sight off lead, focuses well and trains easily, and is affectionate with me with little to no interest in neutral strangers but will let friendly people pet him. I love his discerning nature and protective instinct, the versatility of the breed and how well he takes to new things, that I can take him anywhere and know that he'll be excited and confident in any situation, and his boundless energy that makes me get off my lazy butt, while at the same time he's calm in the house. I love that he herds, swims, tugs, and fetches. And most of all I love his complete devotion to me above everyone else. Every other dog I've had has been more of a "people dog" that would stay with anyone who would pet it and happily jump in a stranger's car but Onyx always chooses to be with me. His looks are a plus too, both because I think he's very handsome and because he looks scary to any would-be troublemakers.
What were your second choices?
Initially my second choices were Dobermans, ACDs, and Siberians. I've wanted a Husky for years but I really don't think they're a good match for me. I'm probably going to stick mainly to herders from now on, and I'll probably always have a GSD. Second choices now include the Dutch Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and Swedish Vallhund.
