GO!

A Small Dog :)

If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

First off, I'd like to say Thank you, to everyone who has taken the time and put their input in on this. Hubby and I, really do appreciate it. way to go

Mozart: First let me say, that you have a very handsome little boy. He is quite adorable, as well as your lovely Yorkie. I have looked a bit into the Bichon Frise, and have met quite a few. I used to live next door to a breed in MN. Her male was named Chance, he was a beautiful and very mellow and sweet dog. His pups were gorgeous, as well as the Dam. I have also looked into the Bologonese a bit, but can't seem to find too much good quality information about them.

Jewel: The more and more I read about the little Havanese, the more I seem to be drawn to them. I have met many poodles, of all sizes, and have seen phenomenal examples of the various sizes. Very elegant, and toned structure, really quite exquisite.

Bruno: I will be the first to be honest, I have never heard of the breed until you mentioned it. So, I did a quick Google image search, WRONG THING FOR ME TO DO!cloud 9 What adorable dogs, they literally look like big teddy-bears with them ears. I seen one picture where the ears on the dog are down, but majority are of them with the dogs ears half erect. Is it typical for the dogs ears to be erect like that? I will be doing some research on these for sure. Thank you for the suggestion! Do you happen to know any more about the breed? smile

Missy: What a cute little guy! I can't quite tell from the picture, was he a bearded or the smooth version? I love the scruffy look of the bearded. I imagine that they are in comparison to the Japanese chin, when it comes to breathing. I am gonna see if I can find more information on their breathing/exercise habits are...

Gunther: I am happy to hear that, that is typical for the breed to be "happy-go-lucky." The one I met had a problem with children though, as in his previous home ,the children of the family teased and abused him so to speak. I don't understand why parents, don't take the responsibility to teach their kids not to pick on animals...he really does infuriate me. shrug

Princesse: I have been around a lot of Chihuahuas as a kid, and I can understand why they are not recommend. wink I did meet a very nice long-haired female Chihuahua though. Her owner intensively socialized her...I mean big time! She brought her to her work everyday, puppy classes, children parks, dog parks, animal shelters..everywhere. That little dog, was great with everyone and everything! shock

Angel- yes, that's the typical ear set on the Pumi. My classmate says that it's the breed's signature look. Awfully cute little guys, aren't they? I love the curled tails and long legs too.

Otherwise, I don't any more than you do about the breed overall- I browsed through some descriptions and checked out the breed club webpage, but you probably did too. smile It seems like Hungarians like their working dogs coated- they have one in large (Komondor) medium (Puli) and small (Pumi). They're rare/new enough in America that most of the current breeding stock and show dogs are actual Hungarian imports (though my classmate's dog was born in America.)

I am glad that chi's are off you list as are dachshunds (atleast for awhile), neither are very tolerant of smaller kids.
My recommendations would be the Cav. King Charles Spaniel, Vallhund, papillon, shih tzu, and havanese. Most of these breeds have already been brought up in this chat. The King charles is great with kids and other animals and very intelligent, they like to be affectionate but are not pushy about it. My friend shows her King Charles in agility, so they like to walk and go on hikes but will also chill at home. The other breeds are also usually good with kids and other animals, and they have been mentioned before.
Make sure if you get a long coated dog that will have to be groomed, you start early. I worked for a groomer and the little shih tzus, pekes, and havaneses were so loving until we went to groom them. After the groom was finished, they went back to being loving and sweet.

Good point Star. I started Gunther getting used to his eyes being touched right away. Now, he doesn't mind it at all and enjoys being groomed. Which is a must. His eyes need touching up every week or so.

I love havanese...mine is very snuggly, not too much. she don't bark that much unless strangers. She was very easy to potty train as well. Another breed you might consider is a bichon. I have both and if I had to do it again I would get both again. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thank you, everyone for the additional information! way to go It all is gladly appreciated. Hubby and I, have not narrowed the list down yet, but we do have a while to make a solid decision wink. Although, we did narrow it down some what, we haven't picked just one in particular.

As of right now the list is:
-Havanese or Shih Tzu
-Pumi- Although, completely adorable...the rare factor is playing a big toll in finding a good breeder in the US. Even more so then my Sloughi, which I will hopefully be getting sometime within the next few years.
-Brusell Griffon
-Pappilon

I believe that raised right a shih tzu can be the right dog for anyone. my boyfriends family has one and she is about 3ish i believe. She was never raised with any formal training and gets away with everything and is a compete brat!! But she can be sweet and i really like the shih tzu. My next dog is going to be smaller. I love Kashmir and the Boxer breed but i want to experience a small dog. I think my next will be like a shih tzu or maltese or something like that. dancing

Kashmir: First and for most let me say. I love the name, very adorable. Anyway, that is exactly how I feel. I absolutely love Pit bulls, and will always have one or more in my home, BUT I do want the experiencing of having/owning a smaller dog as well. cheer

I'm a Chinese Crested powderpuff and I just found out we didn't make the short list! No fair! We're very smart and love to take up space in a lap, or just curl up somewhere else. Is it that we're TOO small? Cause we come a bit bigger, you just have to look. I'm only 8 lbs, but my nephew, Wicket, is almost to 20 lbs, twice the size of his mother, my sister, Belle. Grooming isn't hard on us, you just have to keep us brushed so we don't mat, and we don't shed much, if at all.
We have great personalities, and will gladly be your house security system, but aside from letting you know someone is there, we don't bark much at all.
