What Kind of dog is that?

If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

Divide and- cuddle!!

Kit is full Papillon but yeah I know, he doesn't look like one. He looks a lot more like one when I let his hair grow out really long but I normally trim/cut it. Oh yeah, and he's about double the size of a normal Papillon plus has one ear that just decided it didn't want to stand up laugh out loud A "reject" when it comes to meeting the breed standard for looks I suppose, but he's perfect to us!

Anyways, almost no one ever guesses he's a Papillon. Most people if I tell them he's one kind of just say "Oh" and leave it at that. I wonder if half of them even know what a Papillon is. But I had one guy actually try to start an argument with me on whether or not Kit is really a Pap or not. I just kind of laughed and walked away laugh out loud

The guess I get most often about his breed is Jack Russel. I guess it's his markings and how hyper he is that make them guess JR. He looks nothing like a JR to me, plus he has this amazing silky soft fur that makes me extra confused about why people would mistake him for a JR.

And a lot of people seem to think he's a puppy. He's 3 years old. I think it's funny, because it makes me think about what if he was a puppy, and was going to grow to be huge. Kit-Zilla! Again, I guess this is because of his energy level.

At this point usually when people ask me what he is I just say that I don't know. laugh out loud It's easier to let people think he's some kind of a mix or a mystery mutt then to have to give them the whole spiel about him being a Papillon that doesn't look like a regular Papillon.

We get asked that all the time. One time when we were at the doggie park my husband got tired of answering that question and he replied " He's an alaskan chiuaua" with a straight face and walked off. The person just had a confused look on they're face.

Oz
I've even had people that OWN beagles ask what Oz is. Yes, he's short and doesn't have the "desired" markings, but he's a hunting bred beagle. Colour is secondary concern to hunting drive shrug
Oh and the fact that he has a bit of a waistline apparently writes off his chances of being a beagle too.
naughty

Coby
"Is that an Australian Shepherd with a TAIL? I'd never own one with a TAIL"
"Is that a Collie lab mix?"
"Oh that one's definitely got some Border in him"
Nope, just a yellow Border Collie laugh out loud

Rigby
Now Rigs really is a mutt, so I can't get too put off when someone takes a guess laugh out loud
I've gotten:
"Miniature German Shepherd"
"German Shepherd x Husky mix"
"German Shepherd puppy"

The funniest thing I heard though was a woman who incidentally owned a Border Collie from the same breeder as Coby. After she approached me and knew instantly what breed Coby was, she walked away and I heard her husband ask "What breed's that other one?"
His wife snapped "OBVIOUSLY that's a Kelpie geesh don't you know anything?" big laugh

Personally, I think the shelter labelled Rigby right in being a Kelpie x Border Collie. Something about when she softly puts her ears back and looks at me reminds me of the old BC I used to have.

Yeah, the people who own the breed and still don't recognize it are the best.

"What kind of dog is that?"
"He's a German Shepherd."
"Oh I LOVE German Shepherds!" *Proceeds to tell me about all the GSDs they've owned, how they breed them, would never get another breed, ect.*

I can understand he doesn't look like the tradition German Shepherd, but the people who breed them and don't recognize him (yes, I've had that happen) are just sad.

Or he can be standing next to Booth, the bf's black and tan GSD, and after people finish exclaiming over Booth and their love for German Shepherds, they turn to Onyx and go, "What breed is this one?"

Java

I get that all of the time with Java too. It's gotten a little better as he's gotten bigger, but most of the time I get "Oh that's a pretty Weimaraner."

I think I prefer that to people who think they know though, because I had one puffed up groomer at Petsmart actually approach us while a little girl and her father were petting Java and began to go on a RANT about how he was a "blue" (which he is not he is a fawn), and then how those blue dobermans get cancer and all sorts of other diseases are obviously poorly bred (because they are an incorrect color...which they are not) and incredibly unhealthy...needless to say I was fuming by the time I was leaving, my fiancee nearly had to drag me out of the store.

The only satiating I got for my rage was a quick jump in after she was done ranting where I said "Actually, he's not a blue at all, but a fawn." If looks could have killed I'd be a dead man.

Sheesh, I can understand trying to educate but make sure you yourself are educated before you open your mouth.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.-- Mark Twain

I think any serious breeder who "doesn't recognize" a working line is just being a snot. laugh out loud

People ask me all the time what Zephyr is. Most seem to think I've shaved her and she's an Aussie which I'm actually okay with. party

Most people don't know what the heck Jane is. When people guess, we get a lot of Golden Retriever, occasionally someone guesses Great Pyrenees, and those are our best guesses for her as well. The wildest guesses came from kids: Poodle and Chihuahua.

laugh out loud I would agree, but I don't think the ones I've talked to were reputable breeders. As far as I could tell, they were BYBs. They literally didn't recognize him as being a German Shepherd because he's not a black and tan saddle back.

I've got common and uncommon breeds, so when people ask if Lilith is a miniature husky, I give them credit since they're close enough. AKKs are sometimes referred to as miniature huskies so..

The oddest is with my common breeds - my Minpin and my Dobe. People have asked me if my Dobe was a Great Dane.. shrugthinking and if my Minpin was a Chihuahua.. I mean I get that Minpins are small like Chis but that's about where similarities end..

So it's not just if you have a mix or a rare breed because most people really don't even know the most common breeds.. laugh out loud If you've got a lab probably someone has asked you if it was a 'pitbull'..
