GO!

Those unconsidered.

If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

I will do my best not to make this post too long!

I got to thinking the other day that there are probably many breeds that I have not considered, mainly because I love the German Shepherd. So, I was just wondering if there were any breeds that I had not considered, even if just for fun and to expand my knowledge, so I wanted to reach out to my dogster community.

I'm thinking to make things easier I'd look for a dog anywhere from 30-70 pounds. Definitely no smaller than 25 pounds, and no giant breeds.

For the coat I prefer dogs who wouldn't need professional grooming. I do not mind a good amount of brushing and I don't mind shedders.

Activity level... I think medium. I can handle an hour of exercise, but I don't want a dog that is go go go all day. For mental stimulation I want to participate in Rally Obedience, Agility, and Nosework. I ride my bike with Lenny in addition to daily walks. We play in the yard and also have trips to the dog park and hikes on the weekend when the weather is good.

I want a breed that is adaptable and very 'bomb proof'. Not too sensitive, confident. The cool cucumber. I don't want a dog that is everybody's friend, but not too small of a social circle either. Very smart, but anywhere from fairly to very easy to train. I would like to avoid breeds prone to SA.

I know the traits do depend on individuals, but anyways... any breeds I'm missing? This is more for fun... and I love learning about dog breeds anyways. smile

Until you tighten up your "wants" more and get more specific, that can cover a bit of ground! Included in the list could be Rottweiler, Italian Spinone, Tibetan Terrier, Sussex Spaniel smile

Glad you stopped by to visit my thread Tiller! Be more specific want wise? Let me try.

I want a dog who is not an in your face, very clingy dog. I'd love a companion who is happy to follow me around the house or yard, to settle at my feet or on my lap or beside me on the couch when it is down time but not interfere with things I need to get done while seeking out attention/reassurance. I find that more exhausting than rewarding.

I want a dog who will at least alert to things (not expecting a guard dog, but a living door bell is nice). Not the extreme of everyone's friend, but not too small of a social circle such as seen in the guardian breeds. Good potential to be good with kids. Preferably both heat and cold tolerant since in Virginia we have both fairly cold winters and fairly hot summers. Not too high of a prey drive preferably. I do want a dog who is happy to play fetch (continuously) in addition to riding alongside my bike and hiking in good weather. Very biddable & eager to please. I'd prefer a breed who is not known for DA, though love for other dogs is not a necessity. I'd like a fairly playful breed (fetch, tug, frisbee), though a serious 'worker'. Good off switch in the house. I do not mind vocal dogs.

Not sure what else I can add... like I said this was meant to be more broad just to kind of learn about breeds I might have been overlooking for one reason or another. I love learning about the various dog breeds and their traits and 'personalities'.
