My rare breed shelter dog!

If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

Catahoula is the current vogue breed choice in the local shelter. b

"That's not a Catahoula, that's a pit bull"
"But look at his eyes. They're blue"
"I have blue eyes and I'm not a Catahoula and neither is that pit bull"

The thing is they actually get 'houlas so they know what they look like. They're pretty easily identified actually. Just they like to say 'heeler mix' for anything with a white base and a mask too which irritates the crap out of me. I've seen one heeler ever in their shelter and he was gone the next day. I mean I get why they do it, but I don't think it's particularly right to lie to the well-meaning adopter. Granted people who can't recognize that it's a pit bull and not a somewhat more obscure breed probably don't need that breed anyway (or the pit bulls which I see muscling their 80 year old owners around town but that's another story).

The dog I pointed out (loudly) as not a Catahoula got changed to a 'terrier mix' which is at least somewhat more accurate.

There have been some rare breeds picked up in shelters quite frequently at one time but as breed rescues have grown it happens less and less. I really doubt your 200lb dog is a Sealyham but if it makes them feel special... okay.

I'm am saddened to read that some of you pass judgement and laugh at the efforts people make to try to save a dog's life. Try to remember that unless you are volunteering at the shelters, maybe you don't know what its like.

I am one of the people that are trying to guess the breeds of dogs.

Yes, sometimes I guess strange breeds. If the dog has some look to it, I'll put it down. I will not put down "mixed breed". And ALL of our dogs would be pit bulls if some had their way. This dog was euthanized because the shelter listed him as a pit bull. I think he was a lab mixed with Great Dane. He was huge and super gentle. But now he's dead because of the breed the shelter gave him Would you have laughed at the breed I gave? He had a lot of extra skin on his neck and jowls.

These dogs are not pure bred dogs. If someone had the $$, and did a DNA test on them, maybe you would be surprised and see that there actually is some of that breed in there. Just because it doesn't have all of the physical traits of the breed mentioned doesn't mean it might not have some genetics in there.

It doesn't matter how often you see a breed around. If it is indeed a rare breed, it could be that there is an unaltered male on the loose making babies. In our area, it happens. Often.

When I name the breeds of dogs, unless it is obviously a purebred, I always have more than one breed listed. I do the best I can.
Example of one. I know I miss on many. And when I'm asked about my own, I answer, pure shelter dog. This one is part this and part that *we think* and this one is part this and part that *we think*. What do you think?

If we do get a pure bred rare breed, it usually goes immediately to a rescue group of that breed.

Please remember, we do the best we can. Its all a guess, until you get a DNA test or see the parents. If you don't like what they are doing, how about offering to help rather than laughing, complaining or bashing?
