If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

I do not know any breed or mix that I do not love. Some I have learned great lessons from, but loved. These dogs have been our life along the way with 3 children. Some of these were my family's dogs growing up. When our children were with us, we owned family dogs, not a breed specific for hubby and me. I always wanted a boxer, and she is my new love. My father-in-law had a passion for Dachshunds, now my hubby's love. Our Yorkie is both our dog, We have had the tendency to rescue some dogs along the way from family members, lol. Our limit is 3, as we think that hoarding could be a form of abuse. At this point in our life we have let go with what our children wanted, and will probably always own a Boxer and a Dachshund. Our Yorkie will always be a part of our life, but most likely not a repeat breed. He is still the BOSS for now will be forever loved. Empty nest syndrome?? Maybe---but it really has been too long. I can not remember not having a dog in our life, and most of our life there has always been 2. Heck, I really can't remember when my bed has been empty of a dog, lol!!!

I've also become less interested in getting dogs that have any sort of prey drive regardless of breed, not that I specifically wanted a dog with any level of predominate prey drive but it wasn't a huge deal before, now that I've grown quite an attachment to prey animals that tend to be under appreciated and commonly abandoned/abused and got engaged to a man who loves cats and rodents/rodent type pets, I obviously want to steer away from dogs that have prey driven behaviors. Thankfully I've been lucky with the two dogs we currently have, despite being an APBT and a "Pit Bull" mix, neither is particularly prey driven and although they do have energy to spare, giving them about a third of an acre just out back to run in has kept their energy levels at a manageable amount.

Cuddles! Moar- Cuddles!!! |
| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 8:40am PST | | | | | | I think its natural for your best breed to change.
I will always always always love Irish Wolfhounds, but at this point in my life it wouldn't be a good fit for me. I live in an apartment, always on the go, jog a couple times a day, I don't know that a giant pup that wants to lay on the couch all the time could keep up. And I also love having someone by me 24/7, and IWH are kind of independent.
I didn't even know what an Australian shepherd was when I took Angel home, but either I lucked out, or my life just kind of shaped to accomodate and fit his, but Australian shepherd seems to be a wonderful match for me. We're both full of energy, always wants to keep each other company and go for walks. We also keep each other on our toes, he learns new "tricks" every day and I love it about him.
And the most important thing...
He barely sheds...
So he keeps the clean freak in me very pleased.
But I have to wonder, how much do we accomodate our personality to fit theirs?

Wish some breeder could figure out how to make them live longer

Then I did some hard core research and I came to the realization that I was probably not right for that breed. Being a first time dog mom in a year or so, I now want either a pap or a pom. I've done research, looked at my local rescue, talked to my friends on dogster, I know I will definitely have both breeds eventually.
For all the dogsters out there, please be very careful in choosing your heart breeds. Make sure you do your homework before settling on something. Also, before seetling on any breed, please consider your lifestyle, and whether this is something you can commit your life to for the next 15-20 years.

Goodness- Gracious!

| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 1:29pm PST | | | | | | I know. It did the exact same thing to me. I can't even begin to tell you how upset I was.
There was a gorgeous light red Dogue female that I had my eye on after Grace had been sold to her first home that we came *thiiiiis close* to purchasing. Of course, I'm glad we didn't because a few months later Grace needed a new home and I would've also hated to have been blind sided with this information after bringing my new Dogue puppy home and knowing I had such a short time with her.

Bad Dogs Need- Love Too

My husband and I really wanted a German Shepherd. We got Becky right after we were married, and while I absolutely love her and think Shepherds are amazing, they're not my favorite anymore.
When I was going to tech school I never thought much about pit bulls. I liked them, but I never really wanted one...I wanted a totally dog friendly dog that could go to the beach, the dog park etc. I thought BSL was stupid, but that was as far as I got. When I began working at the SPCA out of school, I began to get more and more drawn in to the breed. These dogs are treated so horribly by people. And more than any other breed, I saw pit bulls that had been horribly mistreated, come back with a huge love for humans. The one I remember best was Stitch, a squat little guy with an enormous head and badly cropped ears. While we were recovering him from anesthetic the little guy started wagging his tail before he even had his eyes open! That evening when I took him out for a pee he couldn't quite make it and collapsed in my lap. We just sat there cuddling. After that I got my first foster pit bull puppy (After a few other foster pups of other breeds) and I was sold.
Although pitties are not the breed I thought I would end up with and definitely have more drawbacks than a lot of other breeds (hatred and prejudice, legislation, massive responsibilty etc) I'm sure I will have one in my life always!

| Barked: Mon Nov 9, '09 1:47am PST | | | | | | I've never really chosen a dog, so to speak. They've all just sorta been dumped in my lap in some way or another. From the big dopey lovable lummoxes on down to the high-energy too-smart-for-their-own-good brats, I've had 'em all, and they've all been the perfect breed for me at that phase in my life. All I can hope for is to be the perfect breed of human for them! | | | | |

Flippy Boop
Wag - Wag - bark - Hello!!

| Barked: Mon Nov 9, '09 8:58am PST | | | | | | It sure has!
When I was younger it was springer spaniels/ retrievers and a old english sheepdog.
Now I like medium energy dogs ie shih tzus etc. I dont mind doing a hours walk or so. But a four/ five hour walk just doesnt interest me anymore everyday.
The tzus I take out for an hour before work or around 6~ 8 thousand steps. Then when I get home I do about a 20 minute walk with them maybe 30 minutes.
They enjoy the walks and so do I
I think tzus will be a breed type for life with me. Before I had Flippy I always had big dogs but now I cant imagine life without her and its all thanks to my husband on why we bought her in the first place. I was looking for a big dog but not high energy and he said tzus will fit around you. And apart from Cinders hes absolutely right. Cinders is the exception to the rule in our house. She hates the cold/ rain/ long walks and just about anything that involves the outside. Shes a complete indoor dog. Whereas the other 4 hate being inside for too long ~ they love bunny chasing, longish walks, meeting people and well they love life
