If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

What kind of temperment could I possibly be looking at. I'm most likely taking one of the pups that look more cattle dogish. Lol, I know I could end up with any type of personality here with a Mutt, but I'm just interested in the possibilities. The Lab is very laid back and shy, The Rottie is very well behaved and needed very little training, and the cattle dog...well, its a cattle dog LOL!

Is the lab genetically shy or did she just never get socialized?
As far as the pups go, it sounds like their temperaments could be all over the place. If it were me, I would choose carefully based on personality and then socialize very well.
The main caution I see here is that Mom is shy. If it is inheritable shyness, she could pass it to some of the pups, where a tendency towards fear might not combine very well with the protectiveness of a rottie or the reactiveness of a cattle dog.
Of course, these tendencies can be modified a lot through careful training and socialization. Chan was probably the most cautious pup in his litter, and went through some horrible fear periods, but now he makes a great breed ambassador after the work I've put into him.Edited by author Tue Nov 3, '09 1:37pm PST

| Barked: Tue Nov 3, '09 2:59pm PST | | | | | | The Mom was not handled correctly and was a very boisterous Pup. So her shyness is due to mishandling by my brother. She's very sweet but, is very nervouse thanks to my brother. He loves his dog, but used very rough training Methods when she was young. So the Shyness is not due to breeding. She may have been under socalized as well, I only just met my older brother about 2 years ago when he got married. We have different Moms, same Dad. So I don't know all the details on Dusty's (mom dogs) upbringing.
The pup I'm leaning towards seems to look more towards the Cattle dog, but is the less Bold of the two pups that came out this way. But, my fiance is leaning more towards a very active rottie looking Pup. Sense its my pup were probably going with the cattle dog BOL!
Also note I have more experince with the cattle Dog Mixes the Rottie Mixes, as I helped my sister rehabiltate Lucy Goose here. She was a very shy, timid and fearful girl when my sister brought her home last year, its been a complete 180 for Lucy who just earned her CGC 2 days ago.Edited by author Tue Nov 3, '09 3:01pm PST

Bandit
Life is GOOD:) |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 7:46am PST | | | | | | Kado said it right. Bandit is at least 1/2 ACD and boy can they be a hand full. Read up on ACD some of them are not a walk in the park. Bandit got all of the bad behaviors that they can get...he is very warry of strangers, gets along with dogs only if introduced, doesn't care that much for younger children, but loves older children, can get crazy distructive if left to himself without excersise. It took a lot of work to get him not to chase anything that came by...herding instinct.
My aunt has always had rotties and they are have been great dogs. She has gotten them from the pound, breeders, and people just wanting to get rid of them. No matter the background they have all come around very nicely.
I would suggest that you get the most confident pup in the litter. That confidence I think really helps the pup grow up to be a good dog that isn't scared of there own shadow. I think that is almost more imprtant then what the pup looks like.

Crash
Very Missed =( |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 8:53am PST | | | | | | I have owned a Cattle Dog, and while he drove me nuts usually, he was a VERY good dog. My boyfriend is in love with the breed. The bond between the two was unreal. Cattle dogs are very loyal and intelligent. Crash's drive was insane! If you had a ball, you could get the dog to do anything. Cattle Dogs have a high pitched bark...ear piercing. He did have a tendency to mouth people's arms a bit, but would let up if you told him to. He loved to go on car rides and was an excellent swimmer. It would be great if you could teach yours at an early age. Their energy level is extremely high. My boyfriend took him on an 11 mile hike when he was 7 months old. (Not a good idea to do, but it was the only time we saw the dog tired haha) Crash wasn't overly affectionate, but he did enjoy a good cuddle session in the morning. He did not care to meet new dogs. If he had met a dog when he was a pup, it was fine. They are great dogs if you have the time and energy. GoodLuck! | | | | |
