Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

Bunny, you just might want to start talking to shelters and rescues down south several months in advance to get the OK to travel. Heck, in the area where I live, a lot of pounds just make you pay $20 and don't ask any questions. Someone down here could probably get you a Standard Poodle within a month or two.

It's a lot easier to get stuff like this accomplished when you're affiliated with a good rescue, though.

It might also be possible to leave word with local shelters what you're looking for... Like, our shelter recently sent a litter of chihuahua-dachshund mix puppies to a shelter in Alabama that had a waiting list for chi mixes.

I just wish there were some sort of massive organizational system that would connect the right adopter with the right dog. Down south, there's a huge excess of adoptable dogs, and up north, there's a huge excess of adopters. But the transport between the two is so disconnected.

Thats why I think southpaws express is awesome! The trouble around here is that some bigger breeds are easy to come by ( GSD or Lab mix anyone?) but the smaller and/or less common breeds are really hard to find , so people go to the pet store or a byb.frown
