Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

I would really like my next dog to be Standard Poodle, but I wont be ready for about 2 years. I have a few financial things I would like to get straightned out and I would also like to start working part time, so that I would have time to do some of the things I envison doing with the dog. I would prefer an adult rescue , and they arent a common breed in rescue. In addition to that, I am looking for certain traits in the dog. My question how far ahead do I start searching?

Well Im kind of crazy and OBSESSED with researching breeds. There are tons I like. I know that for my next small dogs I want a toy spaniel probably a cavalier, but now Im liking ets too so I emailed a few breeders and went to a local dog show for cavs, I know cavs have tons of healht issues so I wanted the good breeders to know who I was early and I had lots of health questions. I may contact a few ets breeders just to get info and because htey are rare.

I also have looked at what my next bulldog will be and on that Im totally undecided between berners, clumbers, newfs, and saints so I have looked at all the breed club websites and talked to people in the breeds trying to figure out which one is best, problem is they are all great. I have contacted one berner breeder I think is good, she thought it was great I was trying to meet people in the breed early. So for me its looking for the breeder and finding out about hte breeds. The rarer the breed or the more serious the health issues the sooner Id start to look. AKC has a meet the breeds event in october and I cant wait to go and see all the breeds I like in person. Ive never met a clumber or an ets so by seeing them up close I think that will give me great new insisght in if theyd be good for me.

For rescue I would start talking to people in standard poodle rescue letting them know you are intersted and serious, maybe you could volunteer at some events or do some driving for them. Then they get to know you. Id also think about putting your name on breed waiting lists at local shelters because if a poodle comes in you might want to jump at the oppurnity earlier.

The trouble with getting involved with SP rescue is that there are none around here. And when I say around here, I mean the nearest rescue is in another province. Even the nearest breeder ( who might have rescue adults) is in that other province.

Well, I believe that it's a tricky situation,it sounds as if it's a matter of luck, because Poodles, and generally any dog breed can go into a rescue at any time, and if you find the dog you like in a rescue you'll have to be ready to take it at once, since many others might be interested at it too.

But,if you feel more secure by doing a research about it you could start researching foster homes in your area, which often take in Poodles.

Good topic & something I've been debating myself. My dog will be six this month, and if I'm going to get a second dog, I'm thinking it should be pretty soon. Her Nibs is already set in alot of her routines, and may have some difficulty in relinquishing her space. How is your dog around others in it's own home?

Which dog ,Dahlia? laugh out loud Bunny is a bit jealous of Princess, but I expected that. Princess is ok with Bunny because what choice did she have big laugh I am more worried about her than Bunny because it will have to be female due to him not being comfortable around big males but LOVING females to the point he was ready to play with a Newfoundlanderbig grin

Totos , I dont even think we have any foster homes for SPs around here. The only one I have ever seen was a rescue from the US.

Well, Bunny you know you always have a place to stay just south of Montreal! big grin

Even if you are contacting breeders -- remember that they rescue dogs as well as have occasion to rehome some of theirs.....(Does the name "Bo" ring a bell?)

Hey, I'm not planning on another pup until Watson is 6, so that is 3 years. Sonny Jim will be 5, and Kado will be a calm, mellow, well-trained ACD mix! laugh out loud

But I am looking at breeders and lines already.thinking

And heaven knows what will show up with Southpaws! I've already fallen in love twice with Southpaws doggies......

Hey, didn't one of the Southpaws doggies go to Toronto? I think the adopters drove down, but heck, I wouldn't mind to visit your province, muahahahaha. It's not like I don't have Nokia Hakkepelitas, thick wool sweaters, Sorels, long underwear, etc.shock And that's just for the summer! laugh out loud

Bunny, i'm in the same position. I'm not ready to get my Weimaraner or Vizsla yet and probably won't be for another year or more. But i've started my research early, chosen the breeder and continue to read up on the pros and cons of both breeds. When the time is nearer i will most probably join a breed related forum too.

I don't think it's ever to early to start your research, especially if you are looking for a breed specific rescue. Many of these have long waiting lists as it is.

I'm desperate for a rescue too, but it will all depend on my circumstances at the time that will determine whether i get a rescue dog or my Weim/Vizsla.

Well, just look at my page. I live in the snowiest town in my county, in the snowiest village in my town, on the snowiest road in my village, and I have the last driveway on that road to thaw out. laugh out loud

But it's not really that cold here. If I'm hot, I can always drive over to Wolcott, and visit The Center for Northern Studies
