Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

I vote for the pitties. By far the most people orientated dog I've owned. Perfectly happy to sit with me as long as I'll sit - even if most of him really doesn't fit. If I stand still more then a few minutes he just sits on my feet, anything to feel connected.

wave Bella is the perfect lap dog! She is only 4.5 pounds of puppy! Loves to sit in my lap. I do have trouble holding her and my laptop in my lap at the same time. She doesn't seem to care she is in the way! laugh out loud She makes room for herself no matter what! laugh out loud So I think the Maltese is just the right size!

I am surprised there aren't more mentions of toy poodles! I have to all but scrape her off my lap, and the other minis and toys I have known have been the same way. Much more so than the more independant dachshunds I loved who were also pretty active and yappy to be honest!

My shih tzu's are very much lap dogs.........

bad part about it is, once you get a shih tzu, you have to have more they are addicting and they are like potatoe chips lol

One of my shih tzu's prefers my lap over a dog bed and is in my lap 80% of the time.

Try having TWO ULTIMATE lapdogs constantly fighting for that title and your lap!!!! My vote goes to Pit's and Chi's, my two proffessional lap warmers. I think any dog can be a good lapdog, but I think that certain breed who were specifically bred for that purpose ( Chi's, Pugs, Peke's, CKC, ect...) and dogs who CANNOT let their owner out of their site ( Pits, Dobies, Weimerianer's, Vizsula's, Labs,....ect). Now like I said before I'm sure all you ppl's dogs love you, so please don't yell at me if I didn't name your breed, I was just naming off breeds that pop into my mind when I think "velcro dog!"

I'm surprised to hear everyone voting for mini doxies as the ultimate lap dog: I guess my sister's doxie is defective! We call her "Jasmine: the Mighty Huntress" for a reason. She would much rather be digging under our storage shed to catch a rabbit than sitting on your lap. I've trained her to climb up on my lap when I call her but after about five minutes she wants down so she can go stick her nose under something else in the room.

My catahoula is a pretty good lap dog. It makes TV time very cozy in the winter. It takes a while to get comfortable with a 90 lb dog in your lap - but we're used to it.

Tohbi has to be touching me or he can't sleep (I guess he's afraid I'll leave without him). So... he's almost always in my lap, or on my feet, or under my head.

I've fostered over 12 doxies and owned 2 of my own and every single one of them has been a lap dog except for possibly Dex. Dex likes to be tight beside you on the couch, not exactly in your lap. As far as barky(ness) it depends on the doxie. I've had quiet fosters and Syd and Dex aren't barky at all unless there was something to bark at. Now if they are tied outside (and someone comes across walking their dog, they will bark because they are guarding their territory. And they will join in if others are barking. I've only had one really barky foster.

We had a lhasa apso/shih-tuz mix growing up and he was the ultimate lap dog. I don't know which breed made him more of a lap dog but every shih-tuz that I have seen has loved to sit on your lap. I haven't really been around to many lhasa apsos to tell how they are. Or a toy poodle they are little love bugs everyone I have seen and my grandparents had one that lived to 17 or 18 years old and he loved laps and was always content there.
