If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

The- Fantastic- Five
Your dog loves- you so love your- dog!

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 3:29am PST | | | | | | Im so sorry to hear the Oliver. That must have been horrible for you.
Im sure there must be some strong collars that will hold pits though, is it possible that people just didnt have collars attatched right. Also I imagine if pits can break through collars other strong breeds like rotties and mastiffs probably can too. I have seen collars slip of hte head though, it happened to my bulldog when he was worked up and has happened to my pugs. Now I use harnesses on htem.

Trixie Bean!
Crazy Bean :D.- Luv ya, Range :)
|
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 4:57am PST | | | | | | Which I am not going to comment on anything else...Any dog could break its collar or harness, if the sizing of the collar/harness isn't right or if the quality of the collar or harness isn't too great. My Trixie broke her harness once. Shes a 45lb GSD cross. We got her a new (better) harness.. No problems since!
I know a Boxer who's owner hasn't trained him to walk well on a leash (he is going to take him to training classes soon though!). This dog has broken over 5 leashes since the year started! So for somebody to say about Pitties that "they easily break regular collars and harnesses" is, IMO, pretty stupid. Any dog could break a leash or harness if it isn't the correct size & strenght for that particular dog!

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 10:58am PST | | | | | | Great threads on the evils of PETA, Rosie! Word needs to be spread on how PETA is just a load of poodoo.
I disagree with PETA on many of their points, including pushing being vegan (nothing wrong with that in itself, but they push it), saying that dog shows are cruel (Orly?), being for the eradication of Pit Bulls, being against hunting (I'm not against responsible hunting), being against all breeding--not just BYBs and puppy mills, and most of all--their being against even the existence of domesticated animals.
They preach a few good points, but they don't practice what they stanging preach.Edited by author Sat Jul 4, '09 11:06am PST

Aja

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 11:14am PST | | | | | | Aja even broke one of the thickest chokers I have ever seen. And she broke her harness, but it was a cheap one so whatever. She didn't technically break the choker she pulled so much that one of the rings (the one on each end) pulled apart and the chain fell out. She was free.
But if someone were to ban Aja because of that I might kill them.

All that lives- is holy. |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 4:20pm PST | | | | | | Personally, I am not a supporter of PETA.
I believe in ownership of animals, I eat meat and one day I plan to own, show and breed some purebred dogs. I have previously owned and bred show dogs.
I don't donate money to HSUS, PETA or the ASPCA. I am leery of giving money to any national organization, and after our local no-kill shelter spent $2,500 (their quote, not mine) on entroption surgery for an Akita that had killed two Cocker spaniels and attacked their owner as well while in a foster home, I don't donate to them, either. I believe in no-kill only within limits.
Instead, if any friends of mine are having trouble paying for shots, spay/neuter, de-wormer or food for their animals, I pay for that for them. At the shop where I work, we have an animal food bank. I believe these things prevent a lot of animals from winding up in shelters in the first place, and you know what they say about prevention versus cure...
I encourage others to do the same. A series of puppy shots or taking someone's dog in to be neutered (usually costs me between $20 and $60) or spayed ($40-80 in my area) can make such a huge difference in the life of a dog and in the life of the owner. You can be absolutely sure that your money is going directly to help an animal, and you get to see the benefits firsthand. If we take care of problems on a local, individual level, things will begin to change more and more for the better.
Of course, I do not wish to push my views on anyone, not in the least. I respect and would like to hear about the views of others.

Black dogs rock! |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 6:45pm PST | | | | | | Oliver, glad you are ok now Gir, I think that is an awesome idea. I am really a dog person, but around here most people spay and neuter their dogs, its the cats that are the problem. People with low incomes get free kittens, cant afford to fix them , and the cycle continues. I spoke to the head honcho at the local shelter and he agrees that a low income spay neuter fund is a great idea, something they would like to get into , but all their funds go into taking care of the animals there now. Btw , here it costs 100 to spay a female cat. It cost me 75 dollars 4 years ago to neuter Bunny ( 20 pounds) I can just imagine how much it costs to spay large female dog. Of course thats Canadian funds, but I dont there is that big of an exchange to US funds anymore. | | | | |

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 7:13pm PST | | | | | | At our town's biggest animal clinic, the one with seven doctors and forty techs/assistants, it's $450 to get a 45 pound dog neutered. It was awful around here- the pound was putting down over 100 dogs a week, most of them mixed-breeds whose owners just couldn't afford to get them fixed (who could, at that price?). Then the new clinic opened and undercut them by SO MUCH that I thought the old one would go out of business. They didn't, but the new clinic is still giving them a run for their money. | | | | |
