Ive already decided that my next small dog will be a cavalier king charles spaniel. Im sure they are a good match for us, its deciding on my next big dot that gives me a headache so many wonderful options and so hard to choose!

Anyway despite my devotion to the cavalier I was thinking about these little guys who I have always thought were cute but know next to nothing about. I have never met one, does anyone know one personally?

Just to let you know, English toy spaniels (king charles spaniels) and Cavalier king charles spaniels are two different breeds of dogs.

Cavs are sweet and very gentle natured, smart too and generally make great all rounded pets BUT there is a downside, they are not the healthiest of breeds so you would really need to do your homework when finding the right breeder.

Good luck

Ping.....these are absolutely marvelous dogs and a personal favorite. Amongst toys, they rank right along with Pugs in terms of being of very reasonable demand. They are marvelous lap dogs, appreciate walks, show just the right dose of sporting enthusiasm, train readily. They are very, VERY gentle and sweet, have a beautifully balanced temperament and really want to please. They are soft and sensitive and have some propensity towards shyness.....socialization and gentle handling matter....but they are not readily spoilable or cloyingly needful and not very issue-y. If you love your Pugs and could deal with a dog more sensitive and easily affected, you would connect with this breed quite nicely way to go

Rosalie you misread my comment, or I misrepresented. Its cavalier king charles spaniels I have done a TON of research on including reading books and speaking to a number of breeders. They are the ones that I know temperament wise are perfect for me, as a small dogs.

ETS I know little about and I read everything on the ets website but there isnt too much of a description. Im going to google tillers comments to Bunny. I just saw ETS heard tehy had SOME similarities to cavs and was attracted to them for that reason, plus the pug face. I do know they are supposed to be a bit shyer. However, the health of teh cavs is so bad I thought perhaps the health benefits would make them a better option.

There are not too many breeders of ETS so I may send an email to the ETS club of america breed referall person for ny or pa just to get some info on the breed. I know some breed clubs will send you an info packet for a dontaion to the club

Hey Tiller in your opinion is the MVD as much an issue in the ets as in hte cavs? It seems there is less discussion of it on the club website

A couple of years ago I was researching Cockers, but also had a look at the Cavalier and English Toy. I remember quite well reading a scientific doc at the time that stated that MVD was at the same prevalence rate in the ETs as in the Cavaliers.

More recently one of the researchers was on DogWorld UK talking about Chiari Like Malformation/Syringomyelia and mentioned that although English Toys do not all have CM (like Cavaliers do) they are noted for having SM in the breed as well. Not enough have been MRId to know the prevalence rate.

Other toy breeds that have a heightened risk of CM/SM are the Brussels Griffon and the Yorkshire Terrier, but the condition is also notably found in the Boston Terrier, Chihuahua, Pomeranian, French Bulldog and a few others I can't remember.

Many breeds are really not open to publicizing some of these problems and you have to dig to find out about them, so I thought I'd mention this little bit that I learned.

I didn't look very far into the personality of the English Toy, but understand they are not as overtly friendly as the Cavalier - can be a bit more shy and more tightly wound and are less of a fit for homes with smallish kids. They are incredibly loyal to their owner.

Yeah, Tia that is kind of what I was thinking as i kept looking, they do have mvd. They also appear to have some hydrocephalus though perhaps not as prevalent as in chis. I think the SM is less prevalent then in cavs.

Honestly I like both breeds, I dont need a super outgoing dog who is good with kids. I basically want a lap dog that will want to cuddle and get on with other dogs and like to go on walsk and outings. IF we do rally o or agility together that will bre great but just for fun. If the dog could do therapy dog work also fantatsic since then I might be able to bring it to work with me sometimes. I think Ill just have to go with a really good breeder with other breeds. I found some cavalier breeders I trust already. Of course the good breeders admit that no matter what hte breed has health issues.
