Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

Bruno, it partly depends on the size of the dogs.

Small breeds, they all live in the house. They have their own crates, there's often a "dog room" where they can be confined when they can't all be running through the house but they don't need to be in their crates, but they spend most of their time with the family, underfoot, just like the rest of us.

Big breeds, it's harder. There's a limit to the number 70-80-100-pound dogs you can have in the house at the same time. So the big breeds, often there are kennels. But in those cases, there's also a schedule, that rotates the dogs so that they spend significant time in the house with the family, go places with the family, etc. This is the kind of place my sister's Lab comes from, and Stella arrived in her home as a well-socialized, well-trained dog.

Different good breeders have different ways of making everything work. But one of the non-negotiables is that pregnant dogs are inside the house, they deliver inside the house, and the puppies are raised inside the house. If that's not happening, there's no excuse or explanation that justifies that lack.

And yes, there are a lot of borderline cases, breeders who are not up to the level I'd call truly responsible, but who are almost there, and if the buyers of their puppies have any problems with those dogs, it will be genetic stuff the breeder didn't test the parents for, not temperament and socialization problems--things that are controlled by the breeder wanting nice dogs around themselves, and putting a lot of care and effort into raising the puppies correctly.

I work at a vet clinic in Toronto, Canada and the staff cringes when we hear clients coming in saying their pets are from PJs...it is horrible!
Most have URIs (upper respiratory issues) and/or vomiting and diahrea...
One regular client has a pomeranian she got from PJs just under 3 years ago and she spent thousands and thousands of dollars (close to 30, 000) on her dog...went to court against PJs...

It is crazy what people feel is a good place to get a dog...all we can do is educate smile

I don't mean to hijack the thread but this is a somewhat related question.

What do you guys think of multiple breed breeders? I've always thought this was a very bad sign, but can a breeder choose to breed a couple different breeds and still be reputable?

I think that there are many breeders who breed 2 breeds who are reputable and possibly a few who breed 3 breeds and are, more then that and forget about it. Id be very cautious with 3. I think particularly with the toy breeds sometimes the breed two breeds and still are breeding on a small scale. I spoke to a few cavalier breeders who also breed english toy spaniels. One pug breeder I know of also breeds cavaliers. The dog who one westminster this year was bred by breeders who also breed clumber spaniels, so they breed 2 breeds of spaniels.

There's a fair number of reputable breeders who are in two breeds. More than that, no, not usually. After all, each additional breed is another breed to learn and keep track of a lot of genetic information; there's a limit to how much you can really absorb, retain, and apply usefully.
