Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

I am rarely speechless , Rosie wink I am afraid that the problem with this video is that people are going to think that this is a good breeder. I know a few years ago , I would not have known the difference myselfcry I am sure she does care for her animals, but that as we all know does not constitute a good breeder. I hesitate to call her a puppy mill , as they dont appear neglected ( although it is hard to tell in a 2 minute video). She is most definately a back yard breeder. No titles, no health checking of the parents, raised in kennels , not in the home , multiple litters through the year. I say all this for the benefit of those who read these threads who may not be as educated in this matter as some of us now are.

Bunny, I'd call her more of a puppy mill than a BYB.... she's doing it for continuous income. Yes, it is smaller scale than the ones we typically see making headlines, but the intent (supporting oneself/family) is there.

Definately the definition of puppy mill. It may not be dirty (of course she could have cleaned up for the taping), not all puppy mills are filthy.
Sad all the same.

I consider her both a Puppy Mill and a BYB.
She does it for money, but she seems to care for her dogs. I am totally, just, wow..... shrug

Now that brings up an interesting point... what is it that makes the difference between puppy mill and backyard breeder? We all agreee that she is not a responsible , reputable breeder, so what exactly is she? I was almost fooled by a byb not so long ago. Home raised Chis , breeding for temperment , not health, no showing, no titles. If I hadnt been reading these threads for the last 6 months, I would have thought she was good breeder.red face

That's okay Princess. We were ALL like that at some point! The important thing is, now you know the difference! And you know a lot more than most people, so kudos to you! way to go

Princess, here is my understanding of the difference.(mind you, there are many that are more knowledgeable, but I'll try....)

Puppy Mills are a veritable "Heck" hole. The dogs are kept in cages stacked upon one another. They never leave the cage, never get exercise, never get washed or groomed, never get a loving pat or playful interaction, rarely have the cage cleaned, and don't know how to even walk on grass! Their sole function is to produce litter after litter after litter of pups, only to be tossed away when they can't produce any more.

A BYB is a smaller version, I believe. Someone has a few dogs, breeds them to sell puppies, but they (in some cases) have some contact with the real world, interaction with people, and time to be out of a cage. Some BYBs probly have good intentions, but not the medical treatment, testing, etc.

A bit simplistic, but hope that helps clarify it a bit. I'm still learning, myself, and get sick to the stomach when I research it.

Puppy mills don't have to be "heck" holes. They can be clean, they can be well-maintained, the dogs can get vet care.

Or not. Because the USDA, whose regs actually do require cleanliness, vet care, and some degree of exercise, makes little or no effort to enforce those requirements.

I'd call this woman a puppy miller, because of the size of her operation (multiple breeds, the dogs live in kennels, she has put money into the operation that just doesn't make sense unless this is a wholly commercial operation, she's clear about the fact that she's doing this as her main source of income.)

She takes decent care of her dogs (according to her, in a two-minute video), but takes them from their mommas at six weeks, and claims to care about the conditions they'll be kept in in PJ's stores, but isn't the least concerned about what homes the puppies will be sold to.

Yes, some of this could be consistent with "backyard breeder" but the conditions are actually too good for a BYB with multiple breeds and producing enough puppies to support a family. Smaller BYBs can look and act a great deal like responsible breeders, and can be responsible in their intentions without having enough knowledge to do it really right. Bigger BYBs, though, can be much worse than the cleanest, most "industrial" puppy mills that act like the best factory farms, and actually comply with USDA regs on cleanliness, vet care, etc.

None of these places are where you want your puppy to come from. None of them do health screening of the breeding dogs. None of them would even think of doing anything with the dogs other than, in the best of these places, playing with the puppies. Only a few of the best BYBs have any idea what proper socialization is.

The wholesome family tone with which she talks about the essentially industrial conditions those puppies are being raised in is creepy.
