Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

What other breeds has your purebred been mistaken for?

Jelly is a purebred AKC and Canadian Kennel Club registered affenpinscher. Most times people don't have a clue what breed she is and ask. When I tell them they usually get a puzzled look on their face and claim they have never heard of an affenpinscher. If they do make a guess then they think she is a Scottie or poodle X.

People still think Lu Lu (a mini-wire dachshund) is a Schnauzer or a Terrier. They're absolutely shocked when I tell them she's a dachshund! Most have never seen a wire-haired dachshund! Some have figured out that she's a mini- dachshund, but they'll think that she's a long-haired. It cracks me up!

Addy: This specific shelter mgr. was not only involved operations but had some intake responsibility as well, and a best guess identification of intakes is necessary. My point was she incorrectly thought that Border Collies were only B&W and any other color indicated a scam. Could be that she had a low regard breeders in general -- I don't know nor care -- but in the case of Jackson, suggesting a scam had me laughing for days!!

Lulu gets Boston Terrier pretty much all the time, due to her coloring. She's actually a French Bulldog. I usually don't bother to correct people unless they ask, "is that a Boston?" because they're usually paying attention to her and that's all she wants. They could call her a canary as long as they're nice to her smile

Yup, we're sure! We got her from a breeder, and I met both her parents as well as all of her siblings. big grin It's the recessive yellow gene, it's pretty rare coloring-- both parents were black and white, as were all of her siblings. There was a light-coloured puppy in the first litter, too.
