If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

Let's go for a- walk! |
| Barked: Mon Jun 29, '09 7:12am PST | | | | | | I volunteered for many years at a no-kill shelter and the shelter mgr., who you think would have an above-average knowledge of breeds,
Why would you think that?
This is someone who has seen a vast number of mutts, a smaller but still significant number of poorly-bred purebreds (or "purebreds") from puppy mills and BYBs, and a vanishingly tiny number of well-bred purebreds.
(And who, also, may well believe that "a breeder is a breeder is a breeder" and that anyone who breeds dogs is out only for the money, and would be likely to scam you.)

Heidi (Papillon) I get all sorts of things here, chihuahua a lot. Then pomeranian, and occasionally yorkie or other small dog breeds. I always love when someone gets it right.
If I am not sure about the breed I always ask them what kind of dog do you have. That way I don't offend someone.

It really bugs me when people use "Golden Lab" - NO NO NO! Golden RETRIEVER. Labrador RETRIEVER. Never together - unless they're two dogs!

Little kids always say Dalmation. Thats the only dog with spots they know. Then the parents grab them and pull them away quickly saying "no, Honey, thats a pit bull".
I'm a Catahoula. "A cat-err-what?"!

Bianca
Graceful as a- moose |
| Barked: Mon Jun 29, '09 10:52am PST | | | | | | Take a look at Zack's and Bianca's profiles, and guess which one people more often identify as a "pit bull." I'll give you a hint - it's not Bianca.
Seriously, I've been asked three or four times if Zack is a pit bull (while Bianca is standing right there next to him), but the only people who seem to think that about Bianca are people who have owned or currently own Amstaffs or APBTs.
Comments about Bianca that I've heard:
- What a cute BOXER!
- Your BOXER is so nice!
- I love BOXERS!
- Does your BOXER shed?
When she was little, she did look like a Boxer, and I'm not denying that there could very well be some Boxer in there, but that's definitely not the dominant breed that comes to mind.
It'd be interesting to see how the results would come out if you let some of these people judge a Boxer conformation show.
