Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

What other breeds has your purebred been mistaken for?

Kiona and Luka often get mistaken for Malamutes or Alaskan huskies, and more often than not Luka gets called a wolf or wolf dog.

I always try to politely explain what breed they are, though, because just because I know exactly what a Siberian Husky looks like doesn't mean they do. I hardly blame the general public for not being able to properly identify every single breed of dog. wink

Most of the time people think Helo is a mutt (despite the fact that he's a pureblood Aussie). I think they just aren't used to seeing the merle-ing and assume he's a mix of things. At my cousin's graduation party some (rude) stranger asked what he was and when I told him, he said "oh I thought he was just an ugly little mutt." Ugly! Hey, that's my baby!

As for Charlie (who is a mutt), people constantly ask if she's a dingo. I'm not sure where they think I would get a dingo, but apparently she looks a lot like one?

Mya

Agility- psycho- mutt!

Mya is Yellow Lab/English Springer Spaniel. Here is how conversations with most people go when they meet her:

Them: Hi!
Me: Hi!
Them: What's your dog's name?
Me: Mya
Them: What a cute puppy! How old is she?
Me: 2 years.
Them: Oh...what kind is she, then?
Me: Her mom is a Yellow Lab, her dad is a English Springer Spaniel.
Them: Oh! Is that why she's so small for a lab?
Me: Yes.
Them: (talking to Mya) you are such a cute mutt!

It's actually kind of funny to watch people, and she does resemble a yellow lab puppy. I've had people say that she has to be a 8 month old yellow lab because she looks JUST LIKE their 8 month old yellow lab! I've also had people say, "so, she's one of those special designer dogs!"
Yeah...

Teddy: Me also. I volunteered for many years at a no-kill shelter and the shelter mgr., who you think would have an above-average knowledge of breeds, was the person who advised me (after looking at his photo) that Jackson could not be Border Collie. She also added that we most likely had been scammed by the person we acquired Jackson from. ??? Good gracious -- he's registered with the ABCA and the person we acquired him was a ABCHA board member.

One thing was certain: My Border Collie was a whole lot smarter than this woman, and also had better manners.

* Bullmastiff (I'm really surprised at the amount of the general population that thinks bullmastiffs are the biggest of the mollossers)
* St. Bernard. ALL.THE.TIME. "Aww look it's Beethoven!"
* When Bam was a pup, a black mouthed Cur.
* And just two days ago we got pit bull.

There have been more, but I've forgotten many.

Fred is mistaken for a coonhound or a basset hound shock 85% of the time when we are out.

I gave up and just nod my head. lol

Haylie is mistaken for a pitbull - get quite often, I thinks its cause she is a dark color and her face is blocky.
