Choosing the Right Dog

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right dog for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about tail wagging and learning.

What other breeds has your purebred been mistaken for?

Gir is another mutt that gets mistaken for a purebred all the time. He usually gets Doberman- which, to be fair, is what I suspect his father was. His mother, though, was a ten year old Beagle that everyone thought was spayed.
My favorite, though, was when my 'expert' sister-in-law met him as a pup.
SIL: Whoever told you he was a beagle mix LIED.
Me: So there's no possible way he's a beagle mix?
SIL: No way. Not even close.
Me: That's funny, I was there when he was born, and he came wriggling out of my friend's Beagle...

I love reading these...

There was one lady once who tried convince me that Teddy was just a really big jack russell.... big laugh When I pointed out that when he was 10 weeks old he was already bigger than a JRT, she then explained to me that Teddy must be a standard JRT, not a toy....ummmmmmmmmm

I also get Boxer a lot, which I don't get. He is the same height as boxers, but does not have the smush nose or the cropped tail.

I also have a question for purebred owners, especially those with rare breeds. Do you get offended when someone doesn't know your breed/mistakes it for another? I ask because I recently ran into a guy and I asked if his dog was an english mastiff, and he got ALL huffy and offended and told me it was a South African Boerboel. I guess I kind of think that if you have a rare breed you should expect people to not know what it is, and not be rude. I was genuinely curious and he was so rude about it---he seriously looked at me like I was a moron...it's not like I asked if a chihuahua was a pitbull (a la Princess BOL).

I cant get that some people think the pugs are mini bulldogs, i mean they are such a common breed. People are always telling me they are SURE norbert is some weird breed or they know his exact mix. Lots of people think Zira is a yorkie

Daddy was once called an "English Bulldog" by a backyard breeder wannabe who said "he can't be full pit, he's too SMALL" (I kindly informed him that according to ADBA breed standards, APBTs should not exceed the 75 lb mark and don't have huge barrel chests, which is a fault; the guy just stared at me like I was speaking a foreign language). Peg isn't purebred, she's a Pit Bull/Pharoah Hound mix, but I've had people think she was or flat out call her a "purebred Pit Bull Terrier with cropped ears" (even though her ears are natural), "purebred Pharaoh Hound", German Shepherd, Shepherd mix (she's only 19" tall, 45 lbs max, with extremely short brindle coat, so I don't get the last ones).

Teddy,

I guess out of our three our alaskan klee kai is the 'rarest'.. it doesn't bother me when people don't know, but it DOES amuse me when the same people in our complex who've seen her for the past 7 months still think she's a "baby husky" even though she hasn't yet broken the 12lb mark in, well, forever... laugh out loud

Cyrus is a mixed breed, and we have no idea with what (we're really just assuming sibe is in the mix because of his face...), but people at the dog park always assume he's purebred. One crazy lady with three sibes of her own kept following me around insisting he's fullbred. His mother was nothing if not a stray mix, though. laugh out loud

I admit that if I'm not sure, I will say something like, "What a gorgeous dog? Is that a *long pause*? Especially if it's something I've never seen.

I love how people get all excited when you get the breed right, though!smile

And I could certainly tell a Chessie!
My brother's neighbors were amazed that I identified their black Flattie with the missing tail right off the bat.....they said they hear ' Border Collie' a lot. I just said, "What a handsome Flattie, look at that lovely head, ummmm......what happened to his tail?"

The Portie owners I have met in the past were always eager to tell me about their dogs -- hope that hasn't changed. And all Boykin Spaniel owners, whether I know the breed or not, just have to tell me that
"the Boykin is the stayte dawg of South Carolinah!" wink
