Sadie &- Buddy
WOof |
| Barked: Tue Aug 5, '08 8:24pm PST | | | | | | Hello everyone,
short intro....I am Salena and have a 1 yr old female chinese crested named Sadie and we just bought a male chinese crested (2 days ago) named Buddy, both are powder puffs.
I admit when we bought our first crested, I knew nothing about them and actually went to see another breed...well we fell in love with the little fluffy pup, brought her home and I honestly can't think of anything negitive to say about her...she is like one of our children lol.
Now, the new puppy... we got him 2 days ago and he is 10 wks old, adorable, playful, UTD on shots, eats & drinks well BUT he smells bad, its like a STRONG puppy smell with alittle nasty to it. So, I bathed him tonight ( after I double checked it was ok since hes so little) and the smell is still strong. I am clueless! Our female has never smelled bad...and all I have read indicated that cresties rarely have an odor.Could something be wrong with him? Could it be he hasnt had a bath before and it may take a few baths to get rid of the smell? He doesn't look nasty at all, fluffy, nice coat. Can someone help? Please?
**Oh, one other thing, he every so often coughs, deep kind of cough. I read that can be normal , or maybe its something more serious such as kennel cough, however he;s had a shot for that and there are no other symtoms...other than the smelly fur.
Thanks in advance | | | | |

i would recommend switching to wellness, innova, california natural, orijen, taste of the wild, kirkland, premium edge, solid gold, or natural balance. dog food.
avoid science diet, iams, eukanuba, dog chow, kibbles n bits, alpo, proplan, purina one, beneful, pedigree, and the goodlife recipe. these brands are full of chemicals and nasty grain fragments.

I'd be concerned with any sort of cough in a pup that young, and it's usually a good idea to take them to the vet when you first bring them home anyways, just for a wellness exam. While you're there, bring up the puppy funk and see what the vet suggests. Could be a food thing, could be a yeast overgrowth, could be something else.

| Barked: Tue Oct 28, '08 5:46pm PST | | | | | | Have your pup's poop tested for parasites. Our shih-puff had a horrible odor. I bathed him and still the odor was there. When I brought him to our vet, he said it might be Giardia (a known intestinal parasite to dogs); the lab tested the poop and sure enough, although he had been dewormed, he needed another dose and the vet treated his Giardia with metronidazole (aka Flagyl).
I found this on Wikipedia - Dogs have a high infection rate, as 30% of the population under one year old are known to be infected in kennels. The infection is more prevalent in puppies than in adult dogs. Infected dogs can be isolated and treated, or the entire pack at a kennel can be treated together regardless. Kennels should also be then cleaned with bleach or other cleaning disinfectants. The grass areas used for exercise should be considered contaminated for at least one month after dogs show signs of infection, as cysts can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Prevention can be achieved by quarantine of infected dogs for at least 20 days and careful management and maintenance of a clean water supply.
Our shih-puff was on Flagyl for 10 days and was good; a few days after starting the Flagyl, his bad odor was gone.

You've got good advice here so far, especially with the food. All the brands the first post gave you are crappy. Stick with more holistic foods. My cresteds get Wellness and my fosters get Nature's Variety. Check his teeth, perhaps he has a mat of hair and food stuck on a tooth causing the odor. Check his ears and his stool. Those are all the smellest spots!

| Barked: Wed Nov 12, '08 10:15pm PST | | | | | | can you post an update? I really hope he's ok and that either he now smells better and /or you took him to the vet. My worry is that parvo and distemper can both have nasty rank smells on dogs. Get him checked ASAP and let us know how he's doing. | | | | |

They are not like other breeds--They are high Maintenance dogs. All Chinese Crested are especially sensitive to many things and needful of constant care and attention--very very intelligent and loving and loyal and they loved to be talked to daily--this goes a long way with training and obedience. Have had mine 11 years and she is a wonder-dog --believe me---she is just so special and so often surprising!! Mine has been on Biljac since day one. But do not give them people food--They do not respond well to that in the long run. High protein is also not good for them.

Sadie &- Buddy

| Barked: Wed Dec 3, '08 10:12am PST | | | | | | oh I m so sorry, I had posted in another thread as well and only updated one.
Buddy is doing great, such a loving boy . the problem was he needed a few good baths, ears cleaned and around his face, he breeder hadnt bathed him at all, and said his mom wasnt cleaning him as well. He hasnt had a smell since thank goodness.
I really wanted a crested with a black face to hide the tear stains ,, and though we cant see the staining on him, it is there, and needs to be cleaned often,, actually more so that the white female,, because Buddy has so much more hair. Anyways, at least twice a week I wipe around his eyes with a warm cloth and loosen the hair with a super soft tooth brush. Oddly Buddy likes it LOL. and it works.
Also the vet said I needed to pluck the hairs from his ears and use a ear wash solution weekly forever buddy boy sure doesnt NOT like that and neither do I....ick ear hair plunking Anyone else have to do this?
