Toby- everyone has a right to their own opinion. What's right for one dog owner may not be right for another wink

Toby, I understand your point, I do, but the only point I see in microchipping a dog is if the id tags might be out of date, or the collar somehow slips off. If someone is going to pick up a dog and "steal" it regardless of id tags or microchip, they aren't going to return it or bother to have them scanned. The only reason for a vet to even suspect a dog of being stolen is if they are aware of a dog matching that description is missing.

Toby...yes, I HAVE read the complete study. My vet recommends having the procedure done while under for both small dogs (mine is just 4lbs) and cats.
I started the topic because I wanted opinions based on experience from other Chi owners. Thank you for yours. Relax...it's all goodwink

I had my Chihuahua microchipped 4 years ago. I was nervous because the needle was HUGE but she was a trooper. She cried more with one of her rounds of puppy shots, whereas she barely reacted to the chip.

I'm glad I did it. While I respect other owners' opinions, this was the right decision for us.

In Spain, where I live, it's mandatory to microchip your pets. In order to adopt a pet: you must michrochip.

Waya is less than 3lbs, and when I saw the size of that needle I almost fainted.

However:

It didn't hurt him at all. In fact, he didn't blink, tense, or even seem to feel it. I was holding him in my arms and absolutely rapt to attention, so I would have noticed. The vet tech said that if it's done badly, it can hurt - but if you pinch the scruff ('apply pressure' looked like a better word from where I was watching from five inches away) beforehand it doesn't hurt at all.

And he's been completely fine. He doesn't roll on it, he doesn't scratch, and doesn't seem bothered at all.

I'm pretty sure that it's mandatory all over the European Union to microchip your pets.
If there were a health hazard, don't you think it would've come up by now?

Both of mine are microchipped, and there was no problem. Foxxy got hers when she got spayed, Tag got his when i got him at the pound. They don't even know they're in there. It swelled up for a bit after injection, but all of the swelling went away after a couple of days. As far as I understand, they numb the area, pinch the skin between the shoulder blades and inject it in there. I've read the horror stories about trouble people had with them, but those kinds of things are very rare. I'm more concerned about the rabies combo. the last time fox had hers, she had a gooseegg at the injection site for a week and a half.

I had Beth microchipped before we went to Hawaii last year. We'll also be getting Abby microchipped.

With the plethora of Chis in shelters and just plain dumped, we want the best chance possible of getting them back, if, gawd forbid, they got stolen/lost.

Beth's got the ResQ chip that is also good in Europe, which is good, since we plan on traveling a lot.

Beth ended up losing the hair in the area she got her first rabies shot. I guess it's something that happens with some dogs in certain breeds. At least it makes for a good identifying mark. (I'm trying to be philosophical about it, since it's not going to go away).
