How many of you opted for chipping? Did you have the dog put under for the procedure? If they were awake, was it evident that they were in pain?

Lastly, once you had the procedure done, have you noticed any awareness or the chip or agitation (scratching, rolling on it) of the area?thinking

Hi Lily! I wish I saw your posting earlier. I had Penny microchipped and was advised by the vet (not her regular vet as her regular vet didn't have the microchipper) that she would not need pain meds or to be put under as I ASKED very specifically. Well, it was very evident that it DID hurt very much!! Penny screamed!! I felt so very very awful!!! I had no idea and I had even asked the vet!! I would have had it done when she was already out, getting spayed and that's REALLY REALLY the best way to get it done, when they're out getting something else done, but her vet that I trusted doing the surgery didn't have the equipment. I felt just awful awful awful and so did Penny! I had to hold pressure on where it was injected between her shoulder blades to get the bleeding to stop for half an hour. Sigh. Live and learn.
She tried to scratch in that general area while it was healing. Now she doesn't even seem to know it's there!
Good luck!!

Well, technically microchipping is meant to be fairly painless so am surprised by the posts here. Bambi had hers done a while back and didn't even make a sound. She is quite a tough girl though! Even on her jabs she is quiet as a whistle and makes it seem like it's nothing. Personally I wouldn't go without chipping with my dogs, I feel it is better to be safe than sorry.

Harley, do you mind sharing the reason you are opting not to microchip?

I know microchips have led to the formation of tumors in laboratory rats, but have never seen any study indicating it has in dogs or cats.

Basically, I'm wondering if your decision is related to the 'pain' or a risk I'm not aware of.

thank you

I just think it's a weird system. I know I'm human, but I wouldn't want this little rice sized thing behind my neck to identify who I am. I don't know, may sound silly, but it seems that with all this technology there would be a better system to identify our missing pets.wave

I love my baby and if she ever gets lost, collars can be lost or stuff can happen to them. Anything and I mean ANYTHING that gets her back home to me is GREAT!
Penny has custom made ID tags also, but stuff can happen to the tags........microchipping is forever! Just make sure you keep the microchip company up to date with your current contact info. Example, if your phone # changes or your address changes, for goodness sakes, contact your microchip registry!! When I read that alot of chip readers don't recognise Avid which is my brand of microchip, I registered her # online with a big ole world wide microchip registry.
Be safe!!

I'm opting NOT to have it done.

I've heard of the studies where they caused tumors in lab rats, and I just don't want to take any chances.

Yes, I know the considerable consequences if he went missing, but I also keep his up to date id tags on his harness that is never taken off at all times.

I am so shocked at this. Has anyone read the study at all? It used a small number of rats genetically predisposed to cancer. You know how many dogs have got a tumour? None. Out of millions of pets worldwide. Not chipping is so silly. You really think anyone who finds your pedigree dog worth hundreds is going to look at the tags and bring it home? I've worked with lost dog sites, and the majority of pedigree dogs are not found by well meaning people. But any vet with suspicions can scan and reunite you with your dog.
As for anaesthesia for such a tiny procedure, anaesthesia can kill a dog, why would you risk that to save the dog 2 seconds of pain? It really is so tiny, just like how babies scream when they have shots, dogs will cry, for moments, that's all. If the dog is having an op then cool, do it then, but otherwise just get it done. If you're so worried about the pain, you can have it done yourself, it's called an RFID chip, a friend of mine has one done and uses it to unlock his computer.
Seriously, chip your animals, it is the only sure way to get your dog back every time.
