She eats dry kibble. It's tiny, about 1/4 inch diameter rounded discs. What do you serve for the moist food? Should I crush her kibble right now? She also plays with her food. She'll toss a piece out of the bowl, then stalk it, pounce, throw it in the air, repeat until she eats it.

I'd definately be thinking about wet food for a little while at least. Toby had wet until 5 months ish and still has some wet.
If it really isn't an option then at least moisten the kibble. At this age I doubt she can chew anything very well.

It's nice to hear that Toby plays and stalks his food, too. It is pretty darn cute!

I choke on my kibble sometimes too - do the hymlick (oh boy I need to learn to spell!) push on her tummy right below her rib cage - mommy has had to do this a few times for me and the food comes shooting right out and then I'm fine.
I never ate wet food, but mommy does home cooking for us to go with the kibble.

Mommy just kind of picks me up with both of her hands around me - but behind my ribs instead like you normally would - and kind of pushes in real quick. Not very hard though cause we are tiny! She's had to do it a couple times once to get that food that was stuck to pop out. Didn't hurt me at all. and I went right back to eating my dinner.

| Barked: Wed Jun 24, '09 2:00pm PST | | | | | | I would warn against doing the Heimlich maneuver on any dog unless you have medical training, let alone a tiny chi. I did first aid for babies and if you get it wrong you can do more damage than the choking would do, including broken bones, paralysis, organ damage, it isn't worth it.
If the dog is choking regularly then something is wrong, consult a vet to check the dog over, and if everything is fine medically then the food is not right.
If you're worried about your dog choking then please do a proper first aid for dogs course, lots of places do it and it could save your pets life.
Wet the food with tap water, maybe mush it a bit with a fork, I did this when Toby first started on dry, but now I just splash it on and swish about a bit.

| Barked: Thu Jun 25, '09 6:37am PST | | | | | | Hi, Katie and Toby, thank you both for being so helpful. I'm going to find a doggie first aid class, asap. That's such a great idea! I don't want to get caught with no idea what to do if an emergency happens again. | | | | |

From Sunday to Wednesday she gained 3 oz! She's also eating like no tomorrow and stretching constantly. She weighed 1.9 lbs as of Wednesday. The vet also immediately saw she had grown! When do chihuahua's reach their adult size?
