Hi, I'm Matilda. I just celebrated my 3 month birthday by going home with my Mommy and Daddy and I had a terrifc vet exam!

We (mommy and daddy) were bad and hand fed her. She was doing great eating out of her bowl for the first two days, and we thought it would be good bonding to let her eat out of our hands too which we did occasionally for the next two days. Now Matilda is turning up her nose at her food bowl. We realize our complete mistake and are trying to fix it. I asked the vet, who said to leave her in her crate or pen and let her eat. We tried, but she still is putting up her nose at the bowl. This is day 2 of this behavior.

I'm concerned because her weight is only 1.5 lbs right now. Not eating will really harm her. I've left her in her crate with food, but she won't eat it unless I stick my hand in the food or stay next to her. She will take bits out and come sit next to me to eat. I lure her back to the bowl with a bit of food in my hand, she takes a bite from the bowl, comes back, etc. I am not letting her eat out of my hand except to lure her to get food out of the bowl. Any tips?

How much do your tiny chihuahua puppies eat? She ate 1/2 tb at breakfast (after coaxing her to eat). Yesterday she ate almost one ounce of food- a little less than 3 tb. The vet said 3 tb is good.

Thank you for all your help!

Hi there Matilda! I'm Tweety!

When I was a pup mom didn't feed me a whole lot either as I was just a teenyweeny thing. I actually think 3 tbs is good too. I only weigh 3lbs at 8 years old so I think your doing pretty good, might even be alittle big at almost 2lbs and 8 years old 8D

I have another question- this time about my ears. The tops of my ears were pointy for the first few day, but now they curl back in any position. Why is that? Could it have to do with teething? You can see them curled back in my new photo and straight in my first photo. Thanks again!

Hi! I absolutely LOVE your name : )
Make sure to feed her several times a day (space out her food) because when they are little they could burn too many calories and get weak. I used to give Harley nutro cal because before I bought her from the breeder, her sugar ran so low they almost lost her. So I fed her often and gave the nutro cal for the first year or so.

Lila and Harley will eat and eat and eat! They are piggies.. Tippi will only eat when she is hungry.

Chi ears are famous for being up one day and down the next but only when they are young. I was worried Lila's ears would never stand up but by about 5-6 months they were fully up! I've read that if the ear aren't standing by 8-10 months, then there is a good chance that they won't, however there are some things that can be done to help them stand.. but they look so cute either way!!

Best of luck, you are precious! wave

Hi, Lila Rae! You have a beautiful name, too! It's so nice to meet you. Thanks for the tip about nutrical. I like to eat half a Froot Loop as a treat, along with my puppy treat twice a day. I'll make sure my mommy always has nutrical on her, too.

My ears are so funny! Thanks for reassuring me they are okay. My parents think I'm cute with any kind of ears, so they'll stop fussing.

Thank you so much! It's because I'm a little puppy and so kissable.

Matilda is a little under the weather right now. We had to go to the emergency vet on Sunday morning because she developed a puffing cough followed by opening her mouth wide with a clearing her throat retch noise. Of course she didn't cough once with the vet. The vet said she likely has an upper resperatory infection and kennel cough. Her lungs sounded clear and her heart sounded fine. She was given penicillin to take 2x a day for five days. It's a virus, but the vet wants to stave off a bacterial infection. I spoke with her regular vet yesterday morning. They weren't very concerned because her coughing was almost gone. She only coughed maybe 3 more times with less intensity from Sunday afternoon until this morning. She's coughing again, and I'm concerned. She's napping now. If she continues coughing when she wakes up, I'll call her vet. She has been eating, drinking, and playing as usual.

She also gave us a huge scare last night. She choked on her food!!! She had been eating, then all of the sudden she came right by my foot with her head down, her ears down, and tail between her legs. I thought she was going to have a coughing fit again. My husband yelled that she was choking! He went into her mouth, I ran for the dog book and said a fast prayer. Luckily, she was able to dislodge it on her own. What a scary experience! She doesn't chew some of her food. Instead she swallows some whole and chews the rest.

What am I going to do with her! confused

I just called the vet who told me her symptoms will last about a week. They said it's okay that her cough is back. It might come and go. I feel a little better, and I hope Matilda does, too. smile

Is the food you are feeding her dry? You can see if the size of the kibble is to big for her...you might want to try a smaller size kibble.

I feed both wet and dry.
I have dry food out all the time they free eat and at night every one gets a spoon full of wet.
