helloooo....! - i'm TALKING to- you!!!!! |
| Barked: Tue Sep 8, '09 11:13am PST | | | | | | i hadn't actually considered getting him registered until she put my back up, so i guess it's more of a "neener-neener" attitude on my part, lol!
i was over it except now i've had so many ppl asking me about putting him to stud that it's kind of looking like a good idea again. i've had three ppl offer me deposits on stud fees on the condition that i not get him neutered and i've had two more ppl ask me if he's available for stud and is he papered. of those five, three asked about papers - there was another who was interested but only if he's got papers. they all said the same thing - he's got the personality they're looking for and they like that he's so much bigger than the usual BC.
there is a lady near me that has a "goose dog" company - i'm hoping to find out who/where she is and if she'll consider lessons. i think dandy would make a magnificent goose dog and i'm hoping it'll translate to "beaver dog", too, because i'm sick unto death of those oversized rodents chewing up my landscaping!
right now, we're working on "tidy up!" which will hopefully be his cue to pick up anything loose on the floor and drop it in a basket. right now, after three sessions, he's learned that "tidy up!" means "charge into the pile and grab things one at a time and throw them hither and yon" - i think i'm the first person in history to have a legitimate reason for a pair of panties to be hanging off the light fixture!

| Barked: Thu Sep 10, '09 5:46pm PST | | | | | | Putting your Border Collie with no known lineage or health testing clearances up for stud when there is already thousands of Border Collies in shelters is always a good idea.
To be straight honest, this whole story sounds completely unbelievable. I know tons of the herding community from all over the US, and I don't know anyone, even the one who like to gossip and are less hospitable, to give such a reaction.

| Barked: Sun Nov 1, '09 2:16pm PST | | | | | | it's not that i "want to" put him up for stud - it's that ppl meet him and after oo-ing and ah-ing over how lovely he is and what a lovely personality he's got, they ask if he's fixed or they ask about putting him with their dog. i don't have posters up or ads out nor do i mention it of my own volition since breeding dogs is something i have zip, zero, zilch experience with and don't really care about . the ppl wanting to breed him are not interested in him because he's a border collie - they're interested in him as an individual with traits they hope would pass through to his offspring, obviously, since anybody wanting to breed a border collie would require papers. even i can figure that part out! | | | | |

| Barked: Tue Nov 3, '09 8:39pm PST | | | | | | You cant acquire a registration if your dog doesnt have one or papers for that matter.
As for stud offers. Both my dogs are spayed, and I had at least 3 people ask me to breed Rush (she is a purebred Border Collie from cattle lines - no papers), and at least 5 on Honey Bear (she is a purebred MUTT I adopted from the shelter ).
So you see, JUST because people admire your dog and want to breed to it, doesnt make it a good idea, if he isnt for sure pure bred and come with papers/registration (which would have been taken care of when he was born by his breeder), then you have no chance of getting them and there is really no proof he is purebred, I would just say neuter him and enjoy your pet. Call him a BC or a BC mix take him to herding lessons and enjoy your dog. People dont realize sometimes BCs come in lots of shapes and sizes and COLORs! So something I always do when people call my Border Collie a sheltie or a rat terrier or try and tell me there is no possible way she is a sable. Its crazy I know it. But I ignore them XD.
As for breeding him. There is no reason too. He has proven himself in no way, he has no pedigree, you have no proof he is purebred, he isnt even 2 years old if I'm not mistaken. No health testing done, nothing really. It would be like taking a dog from the shelter and breeding him or her and creating more unneeded dogs. IMO breeding is something left to the professionals. Please neuter him. I kid you not when I say that I have had people ask me to breed Honey Bear (my 6 year old mutt). She was spayed at 8-9 months, and I had at least 5 offers to breed her before then. Rush was the same way, cept with other BCs, and I was tempted, but nope. She isnt anything worthy of being reproduced (though I love her very much and she is amazing to ME in every way).
Just think really hard about what you are considering doing.

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 3:34pm PST | | | | | | Dandelion: I would neuter him and not think of breeding. Enjoy your position that you have a young, healthy, beautiful dog with many admirable traits, who may or may not have any Border Collie in him. Just enjoy him as he is and leave it at that.
Bear: Actually, you can register on merit. See Maddie and my comments above.
