Dandelion
helloooo....! - i'm TALKING to- you!!!!! |
| Barked: Tue Jul 14, '09 1:39pm PST | | | | | | so i took dandy to the highland games last weekend because they had working border collies doing a sheep herding demonstration and i wanted tips on what i could do with him.
when the dogs were working the sheep, dandy was 100% focussed, to the point that he bit through the tape holding back spectators - i seriously doubt he even knew it was in his mouth (it was just the right height to cross right at his mouth). the sheep saw the line go down and made a break for it but we got the tape back together and the dogs got the sheep back under control. dandy was watching and watching, his eyes going from dogs to sheep to shepherd and back around over and over, like he was literally processing visuals.
after the demonstration, i took him over and asked one of the handlers about him. she looks at him and immediately gets this expression like she stepped in something organic.
"what kind of dog is he?" i said the ppl who gave him up for adoption to the pet rescue i got him from said he was purebred border collie, it's been the same dogs for the past 40yrs since they came over from wherever it was (scotland or wales, my friend can't remember, but "it's one of those kilt-y kind of places". she looks at me and demands his papers. i said he doens't have any.
"why not!"
"um... because they're cattle farmers and don't care?"
"well, if you don't have papers, you can't call him a border collie. it's illegal. he has to have papers." she then tells me there's nothing border collie about him - his face is wrong (no white markings), his ears are wrong (they don't stick up), there's not enough white on his underside (he has a white cross and white feet and a white tip on his tail and that's pretty much it), he's got speckles in the white, and most of all, he's just WAY too big - he's about 8mo old and weighs easily 50lbs and is very very powerful.
so yeah - even though i don't care if he's purebred or not, i felt awful, like i was trying to perpetrate some kind of scam or something.

| Barked: Tue Jul 14, '09 4:26pm PST | | | | | | Ouch I'd hate to say that's the first time I've heard something like that but it's not -_-
I have 3 purebred BCs from working lines in Scotland and when I took them to their first lesson it was all "they are working wonderfully, they have a great connection to you, I've never seen dogs start this well" and I was all excited. Then the trainer told me to get copies of their pedigrees and take them with me everywhere since a lot of people will ask for them.
My dogs ARE registered but it sort of bothered me that there is this idea that without papers the dogs don't count.
Fortunately the herding world is a big place and with all the jerks you will find an equal amount of wonderful people who are happy to work with all sorts of breeds papered or not.
Lastly, um yeah, BCs come in ever colour imaginable with or WITHOUT white markings, every ear set including up and down and a variety of shapes and sizes depending on what their lines have been bred for.
I'm sure you know all that, but for a BC person to be saying your dog looked wrong Just remember they might have been kennel club people, and conformation types tend to have a set idea of how a dog should look and won't open their eyes to the fact this breed has been around for a hundred years and has always come in many variations
Just another reason I hate the show world and the conformation Kennel Clubs

| Barked: Fri Jul 17, '09 11:06am PST | | | | | | Border Collies were bred for working ability not looks. I have 4 BC's, 3 are pedigree, 1 is a rescue, 2 are smooth coated, 2 are rough coated, 2 have prick ears, 1 has tipped ears, 1 has semi-erect ears, 2 are black and white, 1 is tricolour, 1 is blue and white, 1 is heavily ticked, etc, what I'm trying to say is they are not the same. | | | | |

| Barked: Sun Jul 19, '09 8:53pm PST | | | | | | One of the reasons I love BC's, is because they have had a hard-core support to keep them as they are:
Visually diverse but yet, so clear! You always know, when you see one!!
No matter how the ears are set on their head, how long or short their coat is, whether they weigh 25 or 75 pounds..... your first instinct tells you it's a " Border-Collie "! You would have to be blind not to see it!!!!
My first dog was a Sheltie. Even for a male she would have been a little too tall at the withers, but let me tell you..... any shepherd would have been thrilled to have her as a working dog!!!!
I don't like the fact that the "Show-People" look down on the "Working-Class" any more than vice/verca!!! ( which does happen!)
I think it is up to us, as individuals to stand our ground and advocate for our dogs.
If your dog is a good example for its intended purpose, be proud!!!
No matter which breed, they really all should be judged on how well they do their job!
Consider this:
Most dogs are a mix of other breeds, anyway! Breeding and in-breeding is a delicate task, not to be taken lightly.
Don't feel bad for yourself and your dog!!!!
Feel bad for the mis-guided people that have the nerve to turn their nose up on your dog!

helloooo....! - i'm TALKING to- you!!!!! |
| Barked: Thu Aug 13, '09 11:10am PST | | | | | | well, this is dandy, taken last month not long after the games:
[img]http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f115/threenorns/S60 01662.jpg[img]
while at the games and even since, i've heard *any number* of times comments along the lines of "we've had bordies for 15 ("17", "8", "three generations", etc) and that is a very classy-looking dog - you can see right off he's purebred".
then again, i've also heard (only a couple times) that he looks more like a lab than a border collie, so who knows.
but you see what i mean about the size? my daughter is about 38" tall! i just love his coat, though - i spend literally hours just massaging and rubbing and running my fingers through his fur.
i feel horrible, though - i've been working on a bathroom reno for the past month and totally neglecting everything else (housework, dog, kid, bills, you name it) trying to get it all closed in and insulated for winter. sometimes i do get him out but i can't take him out with saari - she simply moves too slowly and the stroller bogs down on the trail and is hard to manage on the road with its rocks and steep hills and runnelled tracks from water run-off.
btw: here's a funny thing - i called the CKC to ask about paper and it turns out i can't get them for him. the CKC does not recognize border collies as a breed, only as a member of the "working dog" class.Edited by author Thu Aug 13, '09 11:11am PST

Jackson's pedigree is registered through the ABCA and ISDS. Were Dandelion's parent(s), any siblings, grandparents, etc. registered? Outside of a registered pedigree line (where there is a paper trail), I'm only aware of one other way to be accepted and registered in any Border Collie registry: pass a series of tests, which includes exceptional herding ability.
I guess I'm confused. Are you looking for existing registration -- or to register Dandelion?

| Barked: Sat Aug 15, '09 10:23pm PST | | | | | | Actually the CKC did just accept BCs and the working BC registry is very angry as am I. Any working dog owners who are found competing in conformation events will have their membership nulled.
We are talking about the brightest, most trainable dog in the world and they most certainly did not get that way prancing around in beauty contests!
We don't need BCs turning into the next show Lab too fat to run or swim or show GSD too crippled to walk in a straight line.
Rant over, yes you can have him registered with the Canadian Border Collie Association if you can train him to trial standards and run a trial infront of 3 judges. Based on his working ability they decide if he can register on merit or not
