Ode to the "Dogs in the City"

This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

naughty I plan to watch it, just to critique! It could become our weekly bitch session on what he did wrong! laugh out loud

Charlotte's choke was on wrong and the guy just laying there as the smaller dog got attacked was insane! The woman just wanted a quick fix. She won't do the work, I guarantee you.

Beefy didn't have SA; he was just spoiled.

Think how much fun we can have finding better ways to deal with each dog's problems on the show. The "trainer" left me underwhelmed.........

I just watched it online. I gave up when my computer froze. For the most part I just don't like the guy! He has that skeeze factor and he thinks he's "all that".
I REALLY didn't like that he let the little dog get close enough to get jumped on by the dog he KNEW was a problem. Didn't like how he said that he wanted to see the dog get worked up, otherwise he wasn't able to train.

I got the impression that the guy was just making stuff up as he went along...

I agree, Beefy was just spoiled. I thought having the wife do some basic training with him would have been good. It would have given her confidence and taught Beefy that she makes the rules. I think it would help for her to always be the one to feed him, too. And to learn to play and have fun with him, so that he wasn't just a nuisance to her. And he definitely needs to be ejected from the bed when he tries to jump in between them to prevent them kissing.

With the aggressive dog, I think I would have wanted to do some treat conditioning, like the link Cohen posted on another thread: http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/14_10/features/Resource-Guar ding-Behavior-Modification_20368-1.html in order to learn that people and dogs entering are a good thing. But I have to agree, given that woman's complete and total lack of judgement, her doing the work needed is very unlikely. She will probably get sued or someone will mandate that the dog be put down. And they'll have video evidence that she knew about the problem.

A leash pop is not a cue!!! and I agree this guy is a joke!! WOW!!! I feel bad for the owners who fall into this trap. Just because the owners saw it on T.V means they have to do it too. Poor dogs getting "Trained" by at "expert trainer" they basically don't know what they age doing wrong. Poor dogs. And who sits there and just watch's another dog get attacked. Its crazy!

I wasn't too impressed. A bit disgusted over the lack of positive reinforcement. But, these people want a right now fix instead of a correct fix. The only things I liked was him telling the model lady that the dog had no right being at the office & telling Beefy's owner's wife to throw the flexi-leash away! I think trying to highlight that many dogs per episode is just to hide some of the "trainers" flaws.

Didn't watch past the intro (taking too long to load), but what really makes me sad about this guys, and this scenario, is that he actually has charisma and what appears to be an upbeat personality.

And that's what draws people in. Its not necessarily that they are so desperate that this guy seems like the hot ticket, its that he's personable, upbeat, and LOOKS like he knows what he's doing, even if he doesn't have a clue.

He's confident. And if I find truth in anything Cesar has said, its that weaker personalities actually do tend to gravitate towards confident individuals (even if that psychology is better applied to people than dogs). "This person seems 110% sure that what he's telling me is correct... therefor, it MUST be so!"

Its the blind leading the meek.

urg! I did watch the whole first episode and can get the appeal, even though what he did was so "basic" hack-ish . . .

He does have an aptitude (schtick?) for people though, the couple with the bulldog that the dude was ignoring the wife for? He got that it was a "couple problem" and not really so much a dog problem. But, call me a sap, I cried when the wife got the dog to walk for her and showed off at hubby's birthday party how he would walk for her. . . . because I thought their relationship was over if he was choosing the dog over her. Yet once she got a little bit of cooperation from the dog . . . their whole relationship changed. . . . .

Same with the model agency chick that let her dog attack her clients . . . really?

So the show is about the "I'm as much a people trainer" angle--and I kinda get the point of that. . . . . eh, I'm willing to give "what's his name?" another chance . . . . he's no Zack George, though!!!

That's true, Gus, professional dog trainers and veterinary behaviorists really do need to be able to work with the people just as well as the dogs. (Which is the number one reason I will never do either for a living) I'll volunteer and assist, but that's it. I found out I don't have the capacity long ago, because no matter how good a teacher/trainer you are, those people still have to follow through, and you have no control over that. All your hard work can be for naught. And when you know full well what can happen to the dog(s) if things don't turn around...Dogs don't hire you and they don't write the checks, unfortunately.

I handled the stable dog for a few sessions with a behaviorist who was working with some serious characters, a pair of heavy hitters who had been purchased as 'guard dogs'. Let's just say those owners had more money than sense and it was like watching a train wreck coming at you in slow motion. No thanks. (behaviorist wisely had them sign waivers galore)

I've only seen the commercial for the show and it cracked me up when he said that he 'spoke dog'. yeah right. Ethologists/behaviorists who study canine behavior as a concentration for years don't make that claim.

ETA: Squam's 'ode' was hilarious even though I didn't catch the epidsode.big grin
