I am Fearless

okay so Im watching my neighbors dogs two Shelties very obedient this has nothing to do with them, but I notice the neighbor across the street had a neighbor come over with their kids and small dog had no leash on and then you know what they did? went inside the house for maybe 8 mins or so left the dog out there not on a tie no electric fence nothing I guess just expected it to stay there guess what it did? ran away down the street with cars zooming by, I tryed to call the dog but he was too far away and could not hear me , plus I had the Shelties outside on the electric fence so I could not just leave the yard( plus one of the shelties is deaf)
So I am outside and see them open the door and look out and looked eek shocked to see their dog is not there umm hello what do you expectwave I just can't keep thinking if that dog got hit by a car or someone got it. The way I like to see it is would you leave and expect your toddler to stay in the yard while you went in the house you should treat your dog the same way. I know some dogs are trained to stay in the yard but that does not mean they always will or that other animals can't get in and hurt your dog or someone could steal your dog. I know other people left their bulldog puppy in the yard they have an electric fence but the dog did not have the collar and was running around the neighborhood and then I see their car pulled in they left the dog in the yard while they went away how stupid and it ran away. These people are just very lucky their dogs have not gotten hit by cars.
The first people I mention have done this a couple times before and when they are in their yard they are off leash they have two dogs one is friendly but the other is not both are small but they run out of the yard and the one will start fights, if your dog is not trained then there should be no way in hell they should be off leash and the dogs that I am talking about are not trained. My two dogs are trained not perfect but they know their commands but they don't always obey and they do not get to go off leash in the yard. Unless we are at the dog park.

None of my four dogs are ever on leash in my yard, nor is it fenced in any way.

Never been a problem shrug

Well, if the dog runs off, yeah, dumb.

But I let Kato off leash in our front yard all the time. Often, I'll go inside to get a drink or answer the phone, etc and leave him up there, no issues. I also know several dogs in my neighborhood that are awesome off leash in their unfenced yards without supervision. Seriously, I'm in awe every time I see them just chilling around the house. Nothing phases them. They just enjoy the people watching apparently.

Some people just don't care sadly frown Do you know whether the dog was found Mozart?

I don't think i'd trust my two in a completely unenclosed garden right on a road ( wouldn't take that risk anyway! ) because they would chase a dog walking by or a cat or something. But saying that, we've just returned from a week away where the garden wasn't fully enclosed. They could cross the stream and run off into the woods if they wanted and we also had the gates open leading on to a small private road that lead to our property, and they didn't set foot outside the garden once despite having plenty of opportunity to do so. We stay in many places that have many escape routes the dogs could find, but they just know they're to stay in the boundaries of our garden.

I don't think I would trust my dogs to stay in a yard that isn't their own - I just haven't trained a long stay well enough... And Titus can't be off our property and unsupervised anyway.

Well, I have tied my dog up in other people's front yards while I visit, but honestly, he made not even the slightest inkling of running off ... he just settles and waits. And he comes out to get wood from the garage with me in the dead of night, no leash (although once he chased a neighbours kitty... whoops... and because it was like two in the morning I had to 'whisper' him back ... not CM style lol.) He is always loose in the backyard and has never even attempted to escape. The panels of the ajoining neighbours fence ripped off and neither noticed it for weeks ... and lo and behold, he still knew to stay in his yard.

I guess these particular dogs needed to be tied. I have seen similar things happen with neighbours dog including one get killed. I never call after them, though. I'm not getting involved in that mess, not my dog, not my problem. Maybe that is harsh but I don't take responsibility for others pets.

We were actually very lucky. Apparently my stepdad left the gate open all night and forgot to close it. So in the morning I let the dogs out before work and didnt think anything of it. When I was walking to my car I was shocked to see the gate unlocked and wide open with Zoe standing right by it. Zoe will normally run if she sees an open door/gate. I ran and told my mom and she was super mad. Lets just say i called him and left him a not so nice message about leaving the gate open!! laugh out loud

When we first adopted Shandi she was clever and learnt how to open our side gate. We'd only had her a couple weeks and I come home and she's just hanging around in the front yard. No road sense at all but I was amazed she didnt run off. Our neighbour said she'd been out almost all day. Well now it's difficult to even keep her in the yard. Little escapee she is.

Both my first Akita and now Mika could be trusted off leash when told to stay in the yard. Kai is close but not there yet. Would I trust them for more than a minute without some type of supervision,no. I know that I can answer the phone or run inside to refill my drink with the front door open but the screen door shut, even Kai provided the security gate we keep on the porch is closed can be trusted longer, they do recognize and respect their boundries but I live near a street that can become quite busy and refuse to trust their lives to luck. That's just me.

Hello, I Love- You

I really don't think the OP is talking about people who take the time to train their dogs to stay on their property off leash.

I had some idiot neighbors (they have since been evicted) and they had gotten a Pit mix puppy. They acted like keeping a collar and leash on that puppy was asking for the moon.

None of us have fenced in yards around here and it's a urban neighborhood where the houses are close together. We literally shared a driveway with these people.

Anyways the puppy was CONSTANTLY running loose unattended. Both Morrison and Sawyer have issues with strange dogs running up to them on their property. And twice I saved the puppy from injury because I was RESPONSIBLE and had Morrison on his leash. As he is barking and growling/hackles up ect and the puppy kept coming towards us, I yelled at my neighbors (who were about 15 feet away talking in a group) "Get your dog! My dog is NOT dog friendly" and I literally had to yell it three times before they even turned to see the situation and then they ended up sending their 8 year old daughter to come and get the puppy.

I was constantly seeing the puppy alone outside loose sitting on the front porch begging to be let in. Multiple times I saw her almost get hit by cars. Multiple times I had to chase her out of my yard.

The owners excuse?

"She doesent like her leash"

Well no crap?! No puppy likes a leash. Thats why it needs to be LEASH TRAINED. Hello people use your brains!

I was not looking forward to when the puppy grew because we have a small chicken coop/run in our backyard and she was already showing way too much interest in my chicks/chickens.

I have no idea if they kept her after they were evicted. I sure hope she found a better more responsible home.

There was also a neighborhood I used to walk Morrison and Sawyer around. But there was one house with a young couple with a Beagle who thought it was okay to let him run loose. He came running up to us on multiple walks baying and bouncing wanting to play. And Morrison and Sawyer liked him. But they liked him so much that my arms were practically ripped out of socket multiple times because they would start bouncing and wanting to run zoomies with the goofy baying hound. To the young couple who owns that Beagles credit after multiple conversations with myself and neighbors they have kept him "under lock and key" for about a year now.
