I wouldn't Reach in and pet a strange dog. I also wouldn't leave my windows down with my dogs in the car, because I know Jax would bite them.

This is so dumb and it reminds me of a story with my own dog.

I was at the Starbucks drive-thru, and after handing me my drink and my change, the lady at the window just randomly decides to stick her WHOLE ARM into my backseat to pet my dog (Olive is shy, so she was backing away) and I didn't see her reaching INTO MY CAR so I just started to go forward and I heard the lady scream --

I felt like pulling back around and demanding to speak with her manager, because I'm pretty sure it must be against company policy to reach inside people's cars. :/

I have no qualms about leaving my dogs in the car as long as it's not too hot for them. I don't like it when people talk to them, but it happens.. Whether I roll down the windows enough to where anyone could stick their fingers in depends entirely on where we've gone--if we're on the wrong side of town I wont even roll down the windows. If we're in a place where I feel more comfortable, and we're only going to be in the store for a few minutes, I'll roll down the windows enough for the dogs to poke their noses out (but not their whole heads).

Fortunately I've never caught anyone trying to pet them, because if I did I'd have a few choice words for them, but we've come back to a few people talking to them through the glass... then when they realize I'm the owner and I'd like to get to my car, they ask stupid questions like "They're cute! Are they Springer Spaniels? You know, Springers are the only dogs with the white markings on the face like that, so they must be Springer mixes." (yes. Really.) To which I just smile and say "nope. Thanks though." laugh out loud

You could say I'm far too trusting, but I feel like I've got a good sense of where it's safe to leave the dogs in the car for a few minutes, vs. where it's not.

Conker - CGC, CA

OBEY ME!

Barked: Mon Apr 30, '12 6:42pm PST
Conker doesn't like people near my Jeep. Here in Oregon, it's illegal to pump your own gas, so somebody's gotta do it for you. That is the only time I have ever seen him outright try to attack someone, when I rolled down the window to hand the attendant some cash. If Conker hasn't been strapped in, I'm sure he would have gone out the window to get the guy.
He's better about it now, but will still growl and show teeth at people who come near the car.

And um, it's not the dog you gotta worry about if you stick your hand into my Jeep. It's the driver. I am more protective of the Jeep than Conker is, and I really hate that I can't pump my own gas here. But random strangers putting their hands in my vehicle? Yeah, they'd be short a few fingers once I was done with them.

I do sometimes leave Jackson in the back of the jeep (in cool weather) but only leave the widow down a crack so no one can stick hands in, I would be very upset if someone tried it on. I also make sure I am quick. He lays down so no one can see him as well, that's just his habit.

I live in a tiny little country town and take Jack to the local shops and leash him out the front, BUT I only ever take a minute tops, I can see him from the doorway, and the street is always practically deserted. An old man was giving him a pat the other day but I was okay with it, Jack is very human friendly so I don't worry too much about people like that. If there are rowdy kids, dogs or people I don't like the look of I won't go to the supermarket at all because it's not worth it.

In a busy town or city I would not do such a thing however, there is a huge difference between a sleepy country main street where pretty much everyone knows us and a busy shopping strip where he could get stolen or hassled. I will wait out the front with him and let my husband go inside in that situation which we often do, especially when travelling as JT goes everywhere with us.

My boys love going out for a ride. They get so excited when they see me put on my shoes and grab my coat. With the price of gas, I'm not going to just throw them in the car and take them for a ride with no destination. If I have somewhere to go where they'll be left in the car less then 5 mins. or can get out of the car and come with me then they can go for a ride. If I'm going food shopping and I know I'll be in the store for a while, then they stay home. My whole point is that people should not be sticking their hands in anyones car to pet a strange dog. Same thing as walking past your house and hanging over your fence to pet your dog. It's personal property and people should respect that not to mention what could happen to them if they oneday stick their hand in the wrong car.

Iso would have reacted very badly. And honestly, this has happened to us before.

Grocery store, 10pm. Just pulled up with my boyfriend and Iso, and the people next to us see my window is cracked and our dog is looking out. Suddenly they REACH IN MY VEHICLE! "Oh we love dogs."

That's fantastic, now can you back get your hand out of my car?! shock

People irritate me so bad. shrug

I had Chow once that I had in the car, when I went to a McDonald's drive thru. The girl at the window reached out to pet my dog. My dog tried to jump through the drive thru window attacking the girl at the window. My Chow was hanging onto the inside of the counter snarling and bearing all her teeth and I was yanking on her rear-end trying to pull her back in the car. When I finally got her back in the car, I drove away without my food. I laugh about it now, but it was not funny then. It just proves that you never know what a strange dog will do. red face
