|Don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but just out of curiosity, I emailed the pics of lucky to the "ask an expert" section of Texas A&M University's agricultural extension site, who forwarded my question at University of Kentucky's ag extension, to see if they could comment on the dog just from observation of pics.
To be transparent-- I tried to word the question without pre-biasing it --- here is the question I posed, with 2 pics of Lucky and the response in their entirety:
ME: I was wondering if it was possible to tell if it appears that this dog has been freeze branded from this photo. . . If a freeze branded animal is shaved down to the skin, would there be any scar evidence on the skin? You can see just a bit of skin where the bottom of the number 5 on her right side was shaved for her spay. Thanks so much.
Extension agent's response: “This appears inconsistent with freeze branding, where the skin or hair regrowth over the branded skin is typically white or very light and there appears to be some darker hair in the "500" marking. Freeze branding would scar the skin. It's possible that this marking could be the result of bleaching with a stencil of some sort, as is sometimes done in field trials. This particular dog is a subject of a lot of internet chatter at the moment and is reportedly in a foster home.”
I thought that was a professional, balanced and succinct reply . . ..
