Dar answered it smile

Only when you are home. Crate when you are out.

Another thing to think about is bell training. Still keep her crated or tethered to you while you are home so you can watch her and be consistent. But you could add a bell.

I hang bells on the door leading outside and every time we go out to potty I ring them. Gus picked up on this as a puppy in a matter of a few days. Grace is picking up on it really quick, too.

This way once she becomes more reliable she can let you know when she needs out.

I still take Grace out every 1-2 hours, but in between that time she will ring her bell if she needs to potty smile

For the bells - if she is having a hard time with them you could try putting peanut butter on them or something yummy, and when she licks it and it rings - immediately get excited "Yay! Ring your bells go potty!" open the door and take her out to her potty spot. She may not have to potty LOL But this can help her understand she can ring the bells and it means go potty.

I had to do this with Gus because he was scared of the bells at first. But after a few days of PB on the bells and excitement when he made them ring really helped!

I think Gus and Grace mean every 30 minutes while you are there. When you are not there, Tuna is in the crate where she is good with not going potty so no worries.

I would like to bring up something that I have found with a lot of my clients. (I am a behaviorist/trainer and I think yours should take a hike, I'm sorry you've already got money in on that.) Most of my clients with potty training issues keep food out all day long for their dogs. Once dogs are on a feeding and watering schedule the potty training issues go right out the window. Dogs should be fed twice a day according to their weight, you can usually find the right amounts on your dog food bag. When it comes to a watering schedule, give a bowl of water after every walk or playtime. The chewing action actually causes a bodily response to deficate and urinate in dogs so after her meals is the best time to take dogs out (10 minutes if not sooner for the beginner). Also, keep on that 30 minute potty break between meals while you are home, and if you are not home, in the crate she goes. If you are out of the home for numerous hours a day, a dog walker is necessary, unless you can go home on your break to let your pooch out. Hope this helps.

Maggie Mae.could you provide a link to the study that states chewing stimulates a urination response? Also, puppies need to be fed more than twice a day, especially a high energy small dog like jrt. I would never limit a dog's access to water, unless it was at night for housebreaking issues.

Squ'my - So sorry I seemed to have offended you. I learned that in veterinary school, If I hadn't sold my books back, I would certainly provide you with the name of the text. Also, here is a link for a feeding schedule, for Tuna's age. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/feeding.htm This info can also be found on multiple sites on the web. Twice a day is appropriate, and I also mentioned that most dog food bags contain the feeding information needed by weight. It goes by weight, because weight can be a measurement of activity. If your dog is very active yet maintains the same weight the same feeding schedule would apply.
