Puppy School and Dog interaction.

This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

Check out your local humane society! That is where we took our class and we had a great experience (and didn't break the bank). Our trainers were super experienced and knew exactly when to break up inappropriate play. I agree that an experienced trainer is important for a puppy class after seeing the play in our class. Apparently, puppies are not very good at reading other dog's signals for appropriate play, and it's important that they learn their manners. Our trainers were really good about breaking up play and doing very short timeouts, as well as rewarding puppies who made good decisions when re-engaging. It was honestly fascinating. After 6 weeks our puppies interactions had completely changed and everyone was playing very "nicely" with one another. A few of the puppies from our class are now enrolled in another puppy agility class, and the difference between the puppies from our class and the other puppies in the class is very obvious. Our puppies are really engaged and excited to play, have great dog manners, and don't show any signs of shyness or fear with the other puppies, and their biting during play is really gentle and appropriate. It's really great to see.
The class was also 100% positive training method based.
Anyway, I say look into humane society training classes in your area.
