Behavior & Training

GO!
This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

"I've also met people like this. Smartly handled..(like a woman) they can be won over...(insert evil laugh here). I played competitive basketball with men, earning their respect took a bit of work and a LOT of persistence..but not once did I have to alpha roll anyone...all it took was being SMART, tough and a few ball fakes."

Two dogs in obedience class. One dog says to another, "Hey, look what I taught my owner to do". He lies down and rolls on his back and the owner throws him a treat. laugh out loud

You are all looking at things from a human's viewpoint. To the dog they are teaching us to give them what they want/need. They learn a behavior leads to a treat so the way they see it they figured out how to get that treat. Ditto for walks, play and most other things.

Just like any living creature they will try to affect their environment to get what they want to the best of their abilities. The key phrase is "best of their ability". That's why clicker trainers aren't in trouble. The dog works you. You work the dog. When both are satisfied that the agreement is to the benefit of both the behavior happens. That's give and take, a key element of teamwork and what any good leader relies on.
