This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

The discussion switched species, though either way I think I still prefer to work with the males. Too tricky having more than one assertive female in the house, don't ya know?
And Cain, I see we rather agree on the theory behind this issue. Though, what could or would happen if we found a way to counteract the testosterone poisoning?
Cody, thank you for chiming in with a case study to support the supposition that males do in fact respond to reward-based training methods.
Becky, excellent training advice as always.
And, finally, very good point Kaya.

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 11:19am PST | | | | | | I find males of ANY species easier, for cliff's sake! Females are always up to something! As for dogs, I had a female. ONCE. We were sort of competitive together....she chewed the centers out of my shirts. Doberman intelligence there, finding that one spot that ruins it FOR SURE! Females A male just would have pooped on my floor. | | | | |

Just kidding, guys. Though, this 'could' be seen as complimentary, ya know. Being easy to deal with makes you more desirable.

Laila, I meant my hubby was hard to train, not male doggies!
But on that topic-I do notice most performing dogs I've seen are males. Are they actually easier to train, or just generally more aimiable?

My personal experience says that they are not more amiable - although that may be very different for other folks - rather, they are just more CLEAR - I tend to know exactly where I stand with the males I've worked with, while the females seem to be a bit.....I don't know....wily?
My friend who works in the intel field says that, believe it or not, they use primarily females for their 'black op' type of work - because they tend to not take things head on, like a male would.
