Behavior & Training

GO!
This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

laugh out loud Yes, it's for real Tiller, though I don't think anyone else was talking about the males of Canis lupus familiaris. The discussion switched species, though either way I think I still prefer to work with the males. wink Too tricky having more than one assertive female in the house, don't ya know? laugh out loud wink

And Cain, I see we rather agree on the theory behind this issue. wink Though, what could or would happen if we found a way to counteract the testosterone poisoning? shock laugh out loud

Cody, thank you for chiming in with a case study to support the supposition that males do in fact respond to reward-based training methods. smile

laugh out loud Becky, excellent training advice as always. laugh out loud wink

And, finally, very good point Kaya. way to go

I find males of ANY species easier, for cliff's sake! laugh out loud Females are always up to something! shock As for dogs, I had a female. ONCE. We were sort of competitive together....she chewed the centers out of my shirts. Doberman intelligence there, finding that one spot that ruins it FOR SURE! Females eek A male just would have pooped on my floor.

laugh out loud It's because females are smarter! So of course they are always up to something and are harder to deal with! That's why males are so easy! laugh out loud

Just kidding, guys. laugh out loud Though, this 'could' be seen as complimentary, ya know. Being easy to deal with makes you more desirable. wink

The females do tend to be complicated, I think that's true of all species.
Their just as smart if not smarter, but defiantly more complicated especially when dealing with same sex aggression.

Well, I see this has taken an interesting turn!
Laila, I meant my hubby was hard to train, not male doggies!laugh out loud

But on that topic-I do notice most performing dogs I've seen are males. Are they actually easier to train, or just generally more aimiable?

"Are they actually easier to train, or just generally more aimiable?"

My personal experience says that they are not more amiable - although that may be very different for other folks - rather, they are just more CLEAR - I tend to know exactly where I stand with the males I've worked with, while the females seem to be a bit.....I don't know....wily?
My friend who works in the intel field says that, believe it or not, they use primarily females for their 'black op' type of work - because they tend to not take things head on, like a male would.

Oh, and, again, this may be quite different for others, but by FAR the worst, most vicious fights I've ever seen have been between females - they just will not stop, whereas males seem to do more posturing & gesturing prior to getting into it.
