Flirt pole

This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

Siri's flirt pole is made to your specs, Nick! He loves that thing and it gives me a way to exercise him in the winter. I can stand in the cleared driveway and he can bound through the snowy yard, chasing the toy on the end of the rope. smile

We're in upstate NY, so we know what you mean about the snow, Moira. We're in the belt buckle of the snow belt, Camden, NY.

Those look like they would be a lot of fun for the dogs! I am a little apprehensive as Shadow has hip dysplasia, do you all think that this would be OK for him? I've heard that a lot of turning is bad for him at this point - what do you think?

Shadow, I think you should consult your vet. I don't suppose anyone here knows enough of the specifics of Shadow's condition to offer advice.

Is that for me??

Nick, Add this to your mental pictures;
The red stuffed toy is hooked on the ceiling fan that is left on all Winter to push the heat down from the high ceiling. 26 pound Moira is on the back of the sectional that extends into the room, jumping to get the toy as it circles by, while avoiding the pole. Oh, and Lily standing back wondering if we both had lost our minds.

After I nearly took out a stained glass Celtic knot that hangs on the other side of the room, I shortened the pole and cord.

I like your posts and advice. Moira likes your flirt pole. Thank you.

Have you ever heard of a dog getting strangled to death by one of these? Like if you made one hanging from a tree branch?

Sassy, I've never heard of it, but I'm sure its possible. Supervision is key with lots of things.

Moira, I'm still laughing at the image you painted. laugh out loud

I'm too old for one but I think my sisters dogs would love something like that. Especially Cassy. She's a 100 lb lab that needs as much activity as possible. That girl never wears out and has 2 siblings to play with.

My first flirt pole was made of a fishing pole. Becky busted it in short order. Marlo's PVC one is tough, he's had it for quite a while. They're so easy to make! The reason I put washers on the pole is because the rope I use is quite thin and I don't want the knots to get pulled into the pole.

The stationary version of a flirt pole is called a "spring pole" and it hangs from a branch or other object that the dog can jump at and hang from.

(This is not my dog, just an example of a spring pole)
