Behavior & Training

GO!
This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

I would like to do some kind of training with my dog, and I am attracted to obedience and agility (and perhaps something like fly ball).

But she also looooves to play tug. She really gets into it, and I can see she has a lot of drive. I figured she wouls absolutelly love to do some bite work.

Only I would like to read up on it / get more info because I don't want her to become agressive or anything (maybe in the hands of the wrong trainer?)

She is really the nicest, most friendly dog with people (including children which she loves) and dogs, and I want it to stay that way!

ps like her motto says, she was "born to sniff", so the tracking part of schutzhund would be really good for her too...

Schutzhund doesn't make dogs aggressive any more than karate makes people aggressive. So you don't have to worry about that. wink

Here are a couple links to point you in the right direction:

If you do not wish to do bite work you don't have to. You can participate in the tracking and obedience phases only.

Try to find a local schutzhund club website too!

Good luck!

Thanks Risa and Natasha!

I hope I can find a club that accepts mixed breeds because I've only seen malinois, GSD's and Rotties do schutzhund on the web sites I've looked at...

Jasmine - Schutzhund is for any dog with the potential and drive. You've either got potential or you don't - it's not about the pedigree. The evaluator for your local club can let you know if it's a good choice for you.

Mommy and Daddy took Herc last night to observe the Schutzhund training in our area and thought it was abslutely pawsome! They said they think maybe Herc is too fat and outta shape to do it (BOL!!). Mommy showed them some pictures of me playing tug and the trainer said that I am just beautiful and just perfect!! She loves the fact that I am intact and am very "toy driven". She said that she thinks I may be the better of the 2 pups to do this and wants me to go next week to check it out!! Mommy hadn't even considered it. She thinks, after seeing the pups last night, that I may like it. Anyone else doing it yet? Like I said, mommy and daddy just observed a little and thought that it looked like a great thing to do.
