Behavior & Training

GO!
This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

The long and the short of it is this: Cesar Millan is using training methods and behavioral analyses that are not new and are not at all unique. They are in fact about 30 years old. They were finally in the last ten years or so beginning to give way to some newer, less harsh, more scientifically based training methods. The Monks of New Skete in the most recent addition of their book took back their advice about alpha-rolling (Cesar did not invent this by a long shot). A lot of new research began to suggest that, like every other animal that it's ever been researched on, dogs learn best through the processes of operant and classical conditioning using positive reinforcement. Lots of new research was done on canine body language and what it all means, and how dogs and humans interperate each-0ther's body language (and it's a lot more subtle than just "I'm dominant, you're submissive"). Turid Rugaas's and Patricial McConnell's work has helped millions of dog owners better communicate with their dogs. I've been told by behaviorists that once you really study dog body language seriously, watching the Dog Whisperer becomes a whole different experience because you can actually understand what the dog is trying to say, and it's rarely what Cesar is saying the dog is thinking. Everything has been leading towards a more nuanced, more effective, more precise and more gentle method of dog training and applied behavioral analysis.

That is why the director of the applied behavioral analysis clinic at Purdue University (this is one of the premier veterinary behavior facilities in the country) says that Cesar Millan has set back dog training 20 years.

I have always said, and believed, that there is no ONE method of training that is perfect. I do like Cesar, and if he needs to hide in my basement because one of you turned him in for being illegal...j/k...he can. big grin
I use a bounty of methods and tailor each one to the dog. Nothing is a perfect fit for everything. We tailor and mend and use the bits and pieces that work the best.
Imho...natch.

Well I haven't ever seen another Cesar thread before... I just started using the forums not too long ago. I think everypup should be able to say what he or she thinks, whether or not it is repetitive. smile

you're right duchess. there have been quite a few of these you may not have seen if you haven't been active in the forums and there will always be more. it's just that this one got stuck on off topic subject matter and avongara was just stating this. but you should feel free to continue with any comments you want to make. i hope i'm not over stepping my bounds as a regular dogster.
