Behavior & Training

GO!
This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

I think the topic was about watching the dog whisperer, behavior and training, not about being an illegal immigrant.

If you said something like his methods are harsh or outdated, or some other constructive criticism then it would fit in this post.

Well I don't feel I dominate Kitai. But I do feel he looks to me for directions. I don't opress him day in and day out by asking for polite manners from him. So many of the good points of Cesar's philosophies seem to get lost in the debates over the alpha roll and flooding, two things that clearly are not everyday techniques to be used by everyday people.

His message about not to pet a dog or give it praise when it is acting badly is priceless. People often think they are comforting their pet when they are actually reinforcing a negative behavior.

I think there is a lot of good on his show. And I always bring up this point but it bears repeating that he alone has done more to educate the public against BSL by constantly showing Daddy the Pit Bull and his other Pitties and Rotties in a positive light so that the public at large has a new image of what a bully breed or Rottweiler are capable of. That they can be calm well trained dogs that can be around other dogs and people without trying to attack or kill everything in sight. Considering all of the negative publicity these breeds get it's refreshing to see someone, anyone, with a public platform like a tv show show people they are wrong in their perception that these breeds are more aggressive then any other breed and and that they should not be banned.

I love Cesar!! And he can be illegal all he wants! BOL!

Edited to add: I also like how he shows Pit Bulls and other "BSL" breeds in a good light -- in the one show they were completely calm when a dog in "boot camp" lashed out!

We all have our "methods" and opinions -- they don't make any wrong or right, he is effective in his own unique way.

I think everyone agrees that information like exercise your dog regularly, be calm and not angry/emotionally charged when training your dog, socialize your dog, and don't give attention when your dog is misbehaving are common-sense things which every trainer would agree with. I don't know any trainer that would say any of these things are wrong and I know many trainers who have been telling people to do these things for a long long time. I don't think anyone is arguing with these things that Cesar says as these are not things that are unique to Cesar. If you watch any of the animal training/behavior TV shows out there you will hear these things many times. I think what makes some people dislike Cesar is the methods he uses to get dogs to obey him and his focus on dominating dogs.
Personally I think the bad outweighs the good in this case-- it is good that he is letting people know these common sense things when dealing with dogs, but it's not good (IMO) that he is showing methods that could potentially injure humans or dogs if people try them, and could also cause worse behavior problems. People may say that viewers should listen to the disclaimer and never try these things at home, but there are plenty of people out there who WILL and DO try Cesar's methods at home after watching his show or reading his book.

The people who are using his methods that can get them hurt are just dumb then. I am sorry but he says specifically .. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME without a trainer. The people who follow blindly will follow anyone blindly and hopefully are few and far between.

I don't understand the feeling that he is a bully to dogs at all. I have watched every episode and I don't really think he tells you to bully your dog. He is one of the few trainers who even says you can have the dog on the bed with you etc. I think he asks you to be in charge at all times. I think he promotes consistency and dedication. We have really had alot of success using his basic methods of excercise and stability. Our dogs looooove their leashed walks now. We ave watched all 4 of our dogs go from pushy brats who did in fact have formal trianing to very loving super happy memers of our family.

When we encountered a "problem" which was my own fault, we called in a professinal trainer and did not try to solve our problem by watching the dog whisperer smile I think it is important for people to not take one persons word as gospel even if they have all the training in the world!

this thread is turning into all of the "Cesar" based threads. We all keep repeating ourselves. The reason for not liking Cesar are the same (hes too rough, he focuses too much on outdated practices, what he does is potentially dangerous...) and for liking him are the same (I learned so much about wlaking my dog, that I should be calm assertive...)
I'm curious to know if anyone has anything NEW to say.

Agreed Elsie Mae. It clearly says to consult a trainer at the beginning of the show. Caesar's methods are only one way of training a dog, there are several different schools on this. He never states that his way is the only way. I don't agree with all of his methods, but it is great that there is a show like this that lets people know that training can reform a bad dog and a bad owner. There is another great show on animal planet called "Animals Behaving Badly", which shows different methods and different trainers, it's a great concept but it doesn't always fit your dog. In our town people are getting into the police dog training fad. It's a fad that doesn't agree with us because my dogs are my goofy furry pals, not police dogs.

I didn't learn to do any of my job skills by watching tv, I had to train at school and practice that training out in the real world. The same applies to dogs, you can't learn it all on tv.

One thing I think is very interesting is that many trainers and behaviorists (including Ian Dunbar, Patricia McConnell, and Jean Donaldson--author of "The Culture Clash"-- and others) and even dog-related organizations (such as the American Humane Association) are publicly denouncing Cesar's training methods as outdated, cruel or inhumane.

I was not trying to be rude or bring in political debates, all I was pointing out was that he has enough bad qualities about him in MY eyes, that adding THAT fuel to the fire is just another turn-off! I do not like his methods, I do not like his attitude, and I certainly do not like his show.
