Behavior & Training

GO!
This is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

My opinion (everyone has one) is that a choke chain requires excellent timing and the idea/concept is to choke and jerk the dog at appropriate levels to extinguish the unwanted behavior be it pulling, lunging, or jumping up. As such anytime you jerk the leash to give that pop/jerk at a level (threshold) that is sufficent for any given dog to modify the behavior ( which is sometimes very hard/aversive) it is only logical that you put damaging pressure/trama on the tracea if the collor is not kept high on the neck above the trachea.. This is a fact that cannot be dimissed. I might also point out that the specific study that was pointed out in a previous post was actually never performed and somehow evolved to highly used (non existance) reference to this issue on the interent. I am wondering...A comment was bought forth about bullying a dog into submission.....does Ceaser do this (any examples would help)and what are the results??
Is using a prong collar for example to teach a dog not to pull on leash considered a bullying method? Not arguing here just trying to understand the concept of bullying a dog as a training method..
Is making that shushing sound (that Ceaser does) along with the threatening/firm/forcefull body postering constitute bullying? I would think it would fit the term but am not sure.
thanks for any opinions.

One more comment about the choke/slip collars. Cesar clearly states that at all times such a collar should be placed high on the neck behind the ears "Like a show dog" whenever any tenstion is put on the lead. My impression, though it may be wrong since there are conflicting comments being made, is that this does protect the trachea. He also says to place any collar in this position whether it is a flat or prong or slip.

I use a choke collar and i dont see my dog laying dead on the floor? Funny, i thought he was supposed to be! Wow! You know just because YOU disagree with something doesn't mean that its WRONG and going to kill a dog! I agree with magnolia on this one... if its used right there should be no problems!

(I use it on Buddy not Pugsley)

And just because something has never happened to you doesn't mean it can't happen.

Plenty of people smoke their whole lives and never develop lung cancer. That doesn't mean smoking is safe.

I never once said it CANT happen... Don't condemn me just because you don't like something...

I think its so funny how people get so high and mighty... If you don't agree with them your automatically wrong!

Don't even bother replying to me because i'm going to take my own advice and leave this thread... Funny how it went from "i like Caesar" to "Caesar is a bad man... Choke Collars are horrible... if you use one you must be stupid and un-educated"

I respect your opioion thats why i'm going to leave now =D

Fun, friendly and informational is the guideline. These forums have been provided as a place for playing and sharing. Snarling, snapping, biting and other rough behavior is strictly forbidden.

We can't all see eye-to-eye on training methods. As with everything, what works for one dog won't work for another. Everyone on this site is passionate about doing what's best for their dog, training or otherwise. This discussion has gone beyond the bounds of "fun, friendly, and informational" so I'm going to close the thread.
