Behavior & Training

GO!
This Forum is a place to gain some understanding of dog behavior and to assist people in training their dogs and dealing with common behavior problems, regardless of the method(s) used. This can cover the spectrum from non-aversive to traditional methods of dog training. There are many ways to train a dog. Please avoid aggressive responses, and counter ideas and opinions with which you don't agree with friendly and helpful advice. Please refrain from submitting posts that promote off-topic discussions. Keep in mind that you may be receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers...not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a trainer or behaviorist!

glad you ahve figured to be calmer with your dog! That is a great thing to get from what he does. There is a reason why there are large disclaimers during his show though, it is not to be duplicated.
Cesar is NOT a trainer, he says so himself. Hi show is purely for entertainment.
I believe getting the basic elements from him is stellar... be calm and don't shout, give your dog attention and excersize and that a dog is not just a fixture in the house. Great! Much past that though I cannot condone.

I love the show and watch each episode several times so as not to miss anything.

I think the best lessons for a dog owner watching his show is to learn to be calm, consistent, learn to read your dog's body language and correct at the right time before your dog exhibits a full blow negative behavior, not right in the middle of a meltdown or after the fact. If people did that much they would never need to consider using some of his more direct, controversial methods to deal with poorly trained or aggressive dogs.

Best of all he shows the world that dogs are seldom "too far gone" and that most can be rehabilitated. I think in his book he said he has only ever come across 2 dogs that he didn't think he could help. That's amazing to me considering how many dogs he's worked with over the years.

Mom likes Cesar but she uses his advice like anyone elses who knows about dog behavior and training. She takes parts from different people and ideas and uses what works best with us. Course I KNOW the whole time what I am doing, I just let her win once in awhile.

We love Cesear!!! He is one in a million. I have used his techniques and they have been so helpful. We have 6 Spaniels and they all are indoor uncaged so it is important that we have control as we have learned about "pack mentality". We have learned to stay in control at all times and the dogs are happier for it.

I don't agree with everything Cesar says and does - but I love his show anyway. Once you know the basics of dog training, I think it would be safe to take ideas from him - but for a rookie, following what he does could be a disaster.

I like the calm, assertive thing. And I really like his emphasis on exercise and discipline. My discipline is a lot different though.
