CONGRATS! Good luck with Hazard.... Beagles get very attached to their owners ... so he will probably howl a bit. Lola used to do that whenever we left her alone, or if my wife or I left and didn't take her along. (even if the other person was still home) ... but now it doesn't last as long ... a minute or two and she goes about her business.

@sprite: we hate the idea of leaving him all day too. But we have to work! Our plan is to do a mix of walkers and doggie daycare, but we have to take him to the vet to get his fecal exam before he can start daycare. We would love to just let him roam but since he's new, we have to work on him learning the house rules first. We let him roam while we are home but for now will have to crate him during the day.

So today we crated him for most of the day after a mile run in the morning. He had to stay in there until lunch time. We left him with the Kong which he seemed to love. However when my guy came home at lunch to walk him, Hazard did not want to go back in the crate at all even the kong with peanut butter wasnt enough to get him to go in willingly. I, of course, dont ever want to force him in because i don't want him to get negative associations, but what's the other option when they are reluctant to go in even with treats?

It was easy with Lola because she was so young. We put one of her toys and her blanket in the crate with her. She'd go in, crawl under the blanket and go to sleep. I would expect it'll be a little tougher if Hazard isn't used to it. Just going to take time and patience!

By the way, Hazard is a cutie! Love that smile.

Congrats on your beagle boy! Lenny doesn't mind being in his crate during the day, we give him his king and he'll chew on that and take a nap though it means he's rearing to go when I get home. He gets two walks a day guranteed and whenever I can we go hiking in the woods in addition to that; the extra stimulus just tires him out even more.
