Hi all, I am considering adopting a beagle mix puppy. I read that beagles are a high energy breed. I am curious--how often do you all exercise your beagle and for how many total hours a day? Does anyone leave their beagle at home all day while at work?

Unfortunately, we do leave our beagle at home during the day because we both work. However, she seems to sleep through most of the day and we walk her in the morning before we leave (around 15 - 30 min), and then she gets a long walk in the evening (1 - 1.5 hr). She also loves to play with other dogs whenever she can, which is great exercise. Anyway, our beagle definitely needs and enjoys a lot of exercise... she gets crabby when she doesn't get enough. On the weekends we take her through a wooded area (1.5 - 2hr) and she's usually knocked out for the rest of the day and she seems calm and relaxed.

@Lola: Thanks for the response. That is very helpful. We are planning on a similar schedule but wondered if that was just too little exercise. We could try day care, but that get expensive fast!

Do you live in a cold area? What do you do for exercise in the dead of winter?

We live in Canada (just outside of Toronto) and Lola LOVES snow!! She loves rolling, diving, swimming, and playing in the snow... so I usually take her out to the neighborhood park and let her go nuts until I can't stand the cold anymore. However, she did pack on some extra weight (just like last winter) so we're cutting back on food and treats. It is tough to keep her slim in the winter when she doesn't get as much exercise. You have to be careful with beagles because they eat too much.

Do you crate her during the day or just her roam the house?

I've never kept a dog in a high-rise before so I'm wondering what would be best.

My first beagle (who was older) loved walks even though she had arthritis, even though she didn't have puppy energy. My new beagle is hyper active and if we don't take her for a run, she chews up our undies. It really depends on how active your beagle mix decides to be, but like all dogs they do need to be walked at least once a day.

We started Lola in a crate as soon as we got her (7 weeks old) and she was heppy in there. We couldn't let me roam around the house alone because she used to chew on books, papers, clothes, and especially my wife's shoes. Now she stays in the basement (unfinished) during the day. It's her crash pad - bed, food & water, toys.... (basically it's like a HUGE crate). She has the run of the house when we're home, but we keep her in the basement during the day just in case she needs to relieve herself. Since the basement is unfinished we don't care if she goes down there - I just clean it up when I get home. Lately, she hasn't done anything (fingers crossed)... But to be honest, she wouldn't be happy in a small crate all day.

Congrats on getting a Beagle!
In the winter, walking is hard for us - we live in British Columbia and it gets quite cold here. Sprite doesn't like the snow too much, so our walks are definitely shorter.
In the summer our walks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. We also walk him up the street or around the block several times per day, and occasionally we'll take him to a dog park in place of a walk. We bike with him sometimes too.
So all in all it isn't that much exercise. Sprite could probably use a longer walk, but we do what we can. The good thing about Beagles, though, is that unlike some breeds they can exercise for hours but still come home and crash.

Also - when Sprite was a puppy we left him in his crate. Eventually we moved on to leaving him in the bathroom because it isn't a very good idea to leave a puppy in a crate for more than 1 or 2 hours. Then we felt bad about leaving him in this tiny room with no windows, so we slowly started letting him roam the house (with the bedroom doors closed) and now we can just leave everything where it is and Sprite won't touch it.
While I'm not really in favor of leaving a dog at home all day alone, it can't be helped sometimes. You could probably take him to a doggy daycare but unless it is one that lets your dog run outside, he'd probably be happier at your house.

Hazard's Home! We adore him. We went for a long walk this morning about 3 miles in 2 hours, so he seems completely tuckered out. He's curled up in crate taking a nap. Later we have a temperament assessment at the doggy daycare then I'll have to leave him alone for 2 hours. I'm just hoping he doesn't howl while I'm out and disturb the neighbors.
