Dear Dogster,

my name is Michael. I've been a long time member of Dogster but hadnt been on here since joining this site in january of 2006.

My friend, a beagle, is Daisy. Daisy is 11 years old. I've come on here to find solace from my fellow dog lovers.. I know you guys are here, whoever you may be.

She looked horribly sick today. Her whole body was shaking. And it was followed by panting.
I was so worried I cancelled whatever it was that I had initially planned-- I cannot fathom to see her like this. Nor think it.

When I took her out to do her business she looked ok then she just sat on the grass for awhile. I was worried and thought a visit to the vet is a must. I felt useless and reading stories on the symptoms I saw online only scared me.

She couldnt get in the vehicle-- a Honda CR-V.. Usually, once the door is open, she would jump right in. Not this time. I bent down to pick her up but she yelped. It took her 10 minutes of looking at and standing by the open door and backing away. I was literally in tears telling her she could do it. And I know she was trying. I ended up getting a tool box to aid as a step up for her to the vehicle.

I breathed a sigh of relief when she stuck her head out the window once in awhile.

Once we got there, she was shaking as she always does going to the vet. The doctor said she has no fever. And her disk MAY be but the doc watched her walk and said that did not look like a problem. She got her blood sampled, her stool, her urine. And Some shot I did not see. The doctor also felt her around for lumps, I guess.. I hope that doc is naturally depressing looking.. because I wasn't liking how she looked.
she also stuck her hand in her behind for some check up-- don't remember for what.

She tells me she may have some type of disease-- kidney or whatever.. she may have mentioned 5 "_____ disease" I didnt really care to listen. I knew it was bad.

She said we'll get results as soon as Saturday. By the way she is 37.7 pounds.

When I took Daisy home.. she looked very tired.. and slept. She hadn't eaten. And she hadn't drank water-- she's been drinking lots of water the past few days, today, maybe once. (She did look at me while I ate my spaghetti-- yes THAT look... I had to give her some). I am bothered by her not bothering me. She showed no interest in treats, she got home and she was shaking again. Uncontrollably.. I'd call for her and she would take awhile to respond and she eventually does.
You know that signature tail-wagging when someone comes in the door? well, father walked in and she didn't even budge.
I thought I'd take her out for a walk.. I took her out..she peed..and she sat in the grass, in the dark. I called for her.. and nudged her leash... she would not move. Eventually she does.. and we walked half of what we usually does. So maybe a 20 min. walk.
I don't like seeing her not awake. But when she is, she is shaking and it saddens me.

She usually jumps in bed with me. but the past few nights, she stayed on th carpeted floor. beofre she would force her self to jump in bed... now, I begged for her to jump in with me. She does have a doggy bed of her own, and I took it from the upstairs and have it by the computer here downstairs where I type this. I will sleep on the floor with her..

My friends, what can I do to see that tail wag again? My God, I think I'd do anything.

As a former vet tech, I tell you that your vet did all she could do at that moment. The shot was probably cortisone, since she suspected a disc problem - it relieves inflammation, and can help with pain.

By now you should have the results of the bloodwork and urinalysis - I hope it's good news. Kidney problems are common in dogs, and most can be treated with fluids and a special diet (Rx k/d), unless the disease is well advanced. Eleven is not terribly old for a beagle - you might have another five years with her.

From your description of the symptoms, I can say that most dogs I have seen in that condition are suffering some sort of pain (maybe arthritis, maybe an injury), and that's why they shake and seems depressed. If your vet doesn't see anything wrong with the bloodwork and your dog still hasn't improved, x-rays are next. They'll show any arthritis or skeletal injury that may be present, and proper steps can be taken to correct that. Your vet will probably also give you some pain pills for her.

I hope she feels better!
