I know it's the treats, he loves soooooo much! We walk 3-6 miles 4 days a week and he goes to day care 2 days a week. He weighs 41lbs and people are starting to call him Fat :O( I don't want to cause him health problems, at the same time he works out more than most dogs I know and I LOVE making him happy with the little things....

You can either opt to feed him a kibble with less fat or cut back on the amount of kibble and treats that you are currently feeding. If he he starts acting like he's starving, then you can add canned green beans as a filler.

It would be easier to be more specific about what would work best if I knew what kibble (and the amount) as well as what kind of treats (and amounts).

Hi Billy--

Lots of treats is probably the main thing that's hurting you here frown Have you considered swithing to lower calorie treats & healthier treats? Almost all the doggy treats I get now are "all natural" & I love them just the same! Are you given people food? I can't say I'm never given people food because my mama has a hard time resisting my sad face, but Mama definitely limits what & how much I get. I never get human "meals"; if anything, I'll get a teeny tiny sample... What about a healthier dog food? I tend to add a couple pounds of "winter weight", so in my mama's paranoia about me becoming an overweight beagle, she switched my food to Wellness Core Reduced Fat. It's a very, very health food, & I had no problems at all accepting the switch. Plus I think with this food Mama watches how much she gives me so I don't overeat! (I normally eat about 1 cup- 1 1/4 cup per day, depending how active I was) Within a couple weeks you could even see my waistline slimming down! I'm a little thicker again this winter (by a couple lbs), but once spring comes and I can be more active outdoors I should slim back down!

BTW... take a look at my pics-- I was Underdog, too!!! Arrrooo!!

Hi there all!
I was gone for about four months last year and left Lucy with my father. By the time I got back she had gained 10 pounds!!! He had changed her kibble and was giving her treats all day. I then decided to change her to a low-calorie kibble but that did not work. My father was still sabotaging her diet behind my back; giving her bits of cheese, cake, crackers and even Tostitos. His excuse – “ I can’t say no those pleading eyes”
She then started limping when getting up and when I took her to the vet she was diagnosed with arthritis. And it wasn’t until the vet told my father that she needed to loose weight because of her condition that he decided to listen and not to feed her behind my back.
I changed her kibble back to eagle pack and started giving her 1-cup to 1 ¼ cup per day (half portion in the morning and half in the afternoon). As for treats - I changed to a brand made of oatmeal and fruits and I give her no more than five a day. And for exercise – only moderate walks three times a week.
I’m happy to say that in 7 weeks she lost ten pounds. She is now back at a healthy weight (21 lbs), and is no longer limping.
Consider changing to a low-calorie kibble and treats. And definitely try to limit what and how much he gets. It will be difficult to say no when he pleads, but at the end you’ll see the results. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
