|One more thing with Bassets. They are prone to food allergies. It is better not to risk it with these enthusiastic eaters. Watch what food you provide (no corn is great), and what treats you give.
You may not see it when they are young, but when they get old some of them suffer with the result of food allergies.
I stand by greenies and nylabones because we have never had to pull them out of their throats and not had to deal with the surgery of getting intestine unblocked. It is just not worth the risk.
Rawhides with Bassets who are very enthusiastic chewers are bad because they gulp and chew in the same breath. They are unable to digest rawhides. Many dogs do well on rawhides, but Bassets are not among them.
Also watch the treat ingredients. Freeze dried all natural liver treats they love. Meat jerkeys are great. No canned dog food instead try salmon in water. Doing it while they are young will not only extend their lifespan but also will keep them from suffering as old howlers.
