I am not a Basenji (even though I look like one!), but we'd like to add to this thread. Even though I hear horror stories about Basenjis, do you think it's worth it to get one? We have three Jack Russells who are wonderful... definitely NOT the horror stories you hear about this breed. Despite what my fiance thinks, my Jacks are not "happy accidents" and it is no coincidence that they are well-behaved... it has taken a LOT of effort on my part to train them and establish myself as the alpha. My concern is that the Basenji would be my fiance's dog, and I don't think he is tough enough for a Basenji. He likes his dogs calm but playful, and very obedient. He loves the Basenji for its beauty and "hypoallergenic" coat, and he thinks that we'll be fine with a Basenji because we have three Jacks who are great. (No thanks to him... I put in ALL the grunt work and he just reaps the benefits!) wink What should I tell him? Should we pursue a Basenji? How are they with other dogs, especially smaller ones? The safety of my JRTs is paramount. They are very dog-friendly and not aggressive in the least; they love to play and run.

Grover "mulches" everything wood... useful in the springtime.

As for training, there's a difference between training a dog that's stubborn vs. a dog that's intelligent. And then it's different for a dog that's stubborn and intelligent... My experience with my friend's JRTs are just that they're stubborn... but Grover is ... smart enough to know what I want many times before I say it, but... sometimes it's just of no consequence to him. Cat-like stubborn is what I call it...

And for all the destruction and replacements, I would never give Grover up. In fact, we've been looking into getting a second... laugh out loud

I spent a great deal of time in obedience school with Keyah at an early age. She's doesn't like other Basenjis, but she is gentle with the cat (they even like to play together) and other dogs.

Because I spent so much time working with Keyah, she ended up bonding with me. So we got Patan, who was to be more my husband's dog. My husband, despite my nagging, didn't commit the same amount of time to obedience training.

It's hard to compare since they are different dogs; however, Keyah is certainly a much easier dog to handle. You can help yourself a lot by looking for a breeder that breeds for temperament. But I still think training is vital for Basenjis. If you don't take the alpha position, they definitely will. They also need a fair amount of exercise. Mine are quite mellow indoors but not if they don't get to burn off some energy during the day.

I don't think you would need to worry about the safety of your JRT's. Basenjis are very loyal to their packs. Yet if your fiance is looking for an obedient dog that won't require a load of work, another breed might be a better match.
