He does some...strange (but adorable!) things that I have never really seen before and I was wondering if any one here has similar experiences with their ACD:
~He loves to lick EVERYTHING! He will lick the walls, the carpet, blankets, pillows, clothes, our feet, our hands, wood posts, tags. And, he can lick for a very, very long time. We got the Bitter Apple spray, and it seems to work a little bit, but we cant spray our entire apartment down!
~He sleeps a lot. From what we read, ACDs are supposed to be extremely energetic. However, he only has a few short bursts (20min) of energy at a time, and only a few times a day. He is content just napping for most of the day.
~He groans and moans a lot, especially when he wakes up from a nap and stretches or when he lays down. Sometimes the groans last 5-10 seconds and are absolutely hilarious!
~He moves, barks, and licks in his sleep. This is also adorable--his paws move a little bit like he is running and I he sometimes drinks water or eats his peanut butter treat in his sleep (yes, I can tell the difference!). Sometimes he will even yip a little.
~When we are going to sleep, he doesn't lay on the bed with us. But, he is magically there, sleeping, when we wake up?
~He doesn't seem to get along well with his tail. He will chase it and bite it. My husbands says that this is normal of any dog, but I've never had a dog with a tail before
Well, that's all I can think of for now. I am so happy to have found this forum! Feel free to post all the cute/funny things your ACD does here!

Right now she is sick so not a good judge but getting better.
But since I have had her she has been the type to run around like crazy and then nap. like clock work.
She doesnt really lick everything, but she does like to put EVERYTHING in her mouth. Doesnt eat everything or chew on everything. Just has to taste it I guess.
And she also just found her tail! It is hilarious to watch her chase it around and even funnier to watch when she catches it!

I am sure he has been vaccinated for it, but with my puppy at my vets they did not test her for it till she was a year old, but yet vaccinated her for it?? always think this is odd, as they did the same for my Border collie pup.. I would have him tested if he has not been yet, and talk to the vet about his licking, it sounds like a ocd issue.. maybe a form of comfort, like a baby with a pacifier?? best of luck with him. all I do know is my girl was a crazy pup, she could go for a 3 hour hike, and still be ready to roll..

Play with the- big dogs! |
| Barked: Tue Nov 17, '09 5:20pm PST | | | | | | Hello! I have 3 ACDs.. and would never have any other breed. I love everything about them. Their high energy, intelligence, sturdiness, agility, etc. makes them the perfect dog for me! I will address your concerns in order!
My ACDs like to lick as well. They like to lick us, as well as other things. Try to give your dog bones and things that are more appropriate to lick, as licking can become destructive!
An ACD that sleeps a lot? WEIRD. My puppy (Rupert) at 3-4 months did a 4 hour strenuous hike, in the rain, up a mountain without a problem. My dogs require atleast 2 hours of exercise per day - good strenuous exercise, not just a walk on leash. We also do agility, hike, play ball, etc. and are looking into herding! My dogs are completely go-go-go, and I know that is what they're bred for.
My dogs are very grumbley! I love it, and it's so cute.
Dogs dreaming is very common .. my dogs do it quite often!
The bed habit may change. Remington sleeps in bed with us, Vista trys to sneak up at night, and Rupert sleeps in his crate. Sometimes they like to sleep on the bed while we're sleeping and not moving around.
My two with tails don't bother them, but Remington doesn't have a tail - he has a nubby!
Haha always happy to talk about ACDs =)
