Hi everybody,

I was wondering what you do with your ACD while you are at work, etc. as I am looking for a new dog, but I am afraid that most of his exercise will come later in the day when I get back from school.

So that brings me to ask what you do with your dog if it is going to be alone for say 6 hours? I have heard that you can crate a dog for that time, but I am afraid that with a high energy dog like an ACD. Thanks for your help.

I crated Dakota from 7:30 to 5:30 while I was at work.

He used to go to work with me, but when my jobs changed, he could no longer come. he was a vindictive pooper, which is why he got crated. it never bothered him. when I got home, he helped me feed and I would play ball for abit with him.

Wow, well that sounds like it might work for us. But one more question is how are they with cats. I ask this mainly because I have 4 cats and because I noticed that Gergia lives with one too. Thanks!

Maggie, my female, used to live with an elderly cat..they would wrestle and play.

Dakota on the other hand..he did not particulary care about the cats and tended to ignore them, unless they tried to swat him..then he would get PISSED..smile

Maxie is fine in his crate too. I have started to leave him uncrated for up to 6 hours and there have been no inappropriate chewing or other stuff... I have noticed that if Max doesn't get exercised (walk, play group, ball in the yard), he tends to get "squirelly" and will go into crazy chewing mode - he did actually destroy a kong ball the other day. So, I think you do need to be prepared to invest time on daily exercise with an ACD.

My first ACD was not good at staying home, she would destroy things to let me know that she was not happy. My little black dog in the pic of my dogs was quite a bit like her but since I lived in the pickup most of the time traveling back and fourth to work she always was with me and so was Wriggly. Now sometimes I have to leave them home during the day because it is so hot and they are pretty good. The little blue border collie makes up for it by driving me crazy when I get home.

Pooka stays home alone for 11 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Uncrated, with a doggie door for access to our (tiny) backyard. I leave her with two treat-filled toys (Kong and rubber ball thing), the radio on, and the blinds up, so she can look out the front window from her perch on the couch (and coffee table, when I’m gone). I shut the doors to the upstairs rooms, just in case.

So far so good. On Mon./Weds./Fri. I take her to a doggie daycare, where she interacts with other dogs all day. One day the daycare staff forgot and left her in a crate for half the day. They forgot all about her because she didn’t make a sound, just lay there quietly and came out no worse for the wear.

If I didn’t have the option of doggie daycare I’d probably have to get her a pet dog -- otherwise she’d have too much alone time. But I’m gone 11 hours -- I think she’d be fine alone for 6 hours.

Remington

Remington is fine alone. I don't leave them more than 8 hours, ever. He has run of the house, but chooses to stay in my bedroom. Vista stays in an ex-pen in my bedroom with toys and bones, otherwise she would chew on things. I ALWAYS exercise them for at least an hour before I go out. I try for 2 hours or more if I'm leaving them for anymore than a couple hours. ACDs need exercise or they're going to act like little crazy monsters!
